As my boys are still going through their Marvel characters phase we decided to get the Fantastic Four for them. This is also a film which hubby was keen to watch as he does like the Thing!
The film is about a group of scientists who go into space to watch the solar storms but unfortunately they are not protected in the space station as they though they would be as the storm is stronger and arrives quicker than they had anticipated. The effects of the storm are soon realised when they arrive back on Earth.
Reed Richards, the leader is now stretchy and can stretch any part of his body, Sue Storm can go invisible and create protective force fields, Johnny Storm is fire and can become a flying fire bolt and poor Ben Grimm comes off the worst as he was outside the space station during the storm is The Thing and he is made of stone!
The owner of the space station, Victor Von Doom was also effected in the storm unbeknown to the others and he soon realises his powers and after becoming bankrupt with no one willing to help him he uses his powers for bad and becomes Dr Doom.
Reed tells the others that whilst he still has breath in his body he will try to make them better and remove their powers but Johnny is not sure he wants his taken away as he is loving the fame and as they become known to the public they start to use their powers for good and to help people.
Will Reed be able to cure the Fantastic Four and return them to normal and just what has Dr Doom got planned to make his fortune back?
I was not expecting to really enjoy this film as it is not something which I would usually want to see but as my boys really wanted to then I though I had better see if it was suitable for them first. The story and characters are from old Marvel comics but as I never got to see any of these I cannot make any comparisons. I did find the story to be good and enjoyed how we were shown how they got their powers and was not just expected to know. The rest of the story was quite typical of a comic book film with the good fighting the bad and had the usual outcome but I did find that it was still very realistic and enjoyable.
The actors and actress included, Jessica Alba, Chris Evan and Michael Chiklis, Ioan Gruffudd to name but a few and I think that they all worked very well together and showed a great chemistry. I think they all did a great job and showed their powers in a great way and worked with the special effects very well. I did find that there were a lot of funny moments involving the powers which added to the film for me. I liked how Reed and Sue had got a past and how it was touched upon in the film and they did have a small hatred for each other as they were secretly still in love with each other. I think this added a little bit more depth to the whole story and I think the actors put this side of the story across very well.
I found the effects in the film to be very good indeed and none of them were noticeably done and they all blended with the film very well. I did enjoy the shots of the fire bolt flying and though we were treated to some very nice views in the process. The soundtrack to the film was good and I did enjoy it. A few of the songs did stand out for me but the others were just not as memorable but they all did suit the film and the places which they were used. The setting for the film was very appropriate as it was set in the present day in America so all the scenery was very appropriate and fitted in well.
The DVD which we have is the two disk special which does have lots of bonus material which includes:-
Disc 1.
Cast Commentary Fantastic Tour Featurettes Music Videos Inside Look and x-men 3
Disc 2.
Heroes are born - Making the Fantastic Four Documentary Four Featurettes Four Deleted Scenes Trailers and TV spots Animatic comparisons
I have not taken the time to watch any of these and only got the 2 Disc special as it was cheaper than the single disc.
The running time of the film is 101 minutes which I found to be quite long enough and the certificate is a PG. I do agree with the rating but as my boys are only 6,4 and nearly 2 I did want to see if it was suitable for them. I found that the majority of the film was fine for them but I did think that they would get a bit scared with the appearance of Dr Doom. To my surprise my boys were not at all bothered with Dr Doom and absolutely loved the scenes where the Fantastic Four were fighting him.
I paid just under £5 or this DVD from Amazon but the price does vary from shop to shop so do make sure you get the best price.
I definitely recommend this film as hubby and he really did enjoy it and my boys totally loved it and according to my eldest it was ‘well cool’! This is a great film for all Marvel fans. Suppose we will be watching the second one very soon now!
Advantages: Some nice effects Disadvantages: Lame script, They ruin Dr Doom, Incredibly stupid
awesome scenes involving Doom but we don't really get to see him until the finale and then it's incredibly lame. For the majority of the movie there is a lot of banal dialogue and the occasional action set-piece. Sadly all the best bits are already in the trailers so there's no surprises. In fact the FantasticFour aren't actually fantastic. They cause million of dollars worth of damage and destruction through their own doing but every one around them thinks it's cool. The only person who comes out with any credit is Michael Chiklis as The Thing/Ben Grimm.
Director Tim Story should stick to films like Barbershop as there's nothing inspirational here. This has the potential to be as good as Spiderman but instead it's not even on par with rival Marvel dud Daredevil.
-Bow before Doom and deliver the DVD!-
Crap film aside, I have to say ...
Advantages: Some good special effects and CGI Disadvantages: Too slow, not enough of a story, lost interest before the end
PG in the UK. This is mainly for some scenes of action and 'suggestive content', according to IMDB. Not entirely sure what thats referring to but I didn't notice any particularly bad language or anything too offensive in the amount of the movie I managed to watch and im sure that slightly older kids (of maybe 7 or 8 years and older) would be able to enjoy this. This is about right considering the target audience im sure, kids would probably quite enjoy parts of the movie to see the CGI effects with the characters using their special super powers in full effect.

DVD Description
FantasticFour is a light-hearted and funny take on Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help of former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) in order to pursue outer-space research involving human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. DVD Description
In this thrill-filled live-action Marvel Comics adaptation, director Tim Story ('Barber Shop') balances comedy, romantic intrigue, special effects, high action, and even scientific trivia for a rounded 'Fantastic Four'. Here, Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and The Thing come together on a space mission that goes wrong. The ship's owner - who later transforms into evil Doctor Doom - refuses to abort the mission during a solar storm, which electrifies the ship and its entire crew, causing radical changes to their DNA. Back on earth, the transformed 'heroes' adjust to their new powers, which are specific to their personalities. Mister Fantastic, who lacks assertion, has stretchy limbs of rubber. Invisible Woman, who loves Fantastic but thinks he can't see her for who she really is, does a disappearing act. The Human Torch, an immature guy who is brimming with energy, can burst into flames. And finally, The Thing, a great friend who is as solid as a rock, actually turns into one - and loses his wife due to his weighty disposition. Holing up in Fantastic's scientific lab where they run experiments on themselves in hopes of changing back to normal, the crew learns that Doctor Doom - who is so power hungry that he turns into metal and is able to conduct electrical currents - poses a serious threat. The heroes quickly master their abilities and channel their scientific smarts for one truly fantastic five-way face-off. Visually, action sequences give way to tranquil interludes such as the New York City skyline with the Fantastic's lab glowing atop a skyscraper, while plot-wise, the interplay between the characters brings a human element to the film, with some touching moments from The Thing. At the end, a door is left open for what could be a super sequel.
