Many critics gave this a panning on its initial release, mainly saying that animation, particularly Mr Disney's brand of entertainment was too showy to be put against 'great art' like the classical music used in the film. Surely the argument there is that great music is for everybody and if this is the only way a lot of people would hear it, so be it. Anyway for the most part the epidoses work a treat, especially the hippo, ostriches and alligator ballet sequence which is a supreme piece of animation which goes perfectly with the 'Dance of the Hours' by Ponchielli. But the most successful and famous sequence has to be Mickey conducting the brooms and buckets to 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'. I always find it slow going and a little glum towards the end but mostly a real gem.
