three seasons, plus two bonus discs of additional material including commentaries, deleted scenes and featurettes.Creator Seth MacFarlane drew on his own New England upbringing to create the dysfunctional Griffin family and the other less-than-endearing inhabitants of Quahog, Rhode Island. In addition to animating the original concept, MacFarlane also voices the show's three most indelible characters: recklessly stupid paterfamilias Peter Griffin, sophisticated pooch Brian and Stewie, the one-year-old obsessed with world domination.Though comparisons are inevitable, from the outsetFamily Guyestablished itself as no mereSimpsonsclone. Quahog is both a more realistic and far less cuddly place than Springfield. The Griffins and their neighbours inhabit a town where both random acts of violence and virulent verbal abuse are doled out on a regular basis; they indulge in copious (albeit mild) swearing; and the mocking of minorities, PC attitudes and pretty much anyone and anything else, is delightfully commonplace. Most joyfully distinctive of all, though, are the flashbacks, surreal episodes and sundry othernon sequitursthat continually interrupt the Griffins' daily lives. The show is also characterised by a plethora of pop-culture references, many of which will fall flat for a non-US audience. But the scattershot approach to jokes--they just keep coming and coming--ensures that for every one you don't get, there will be three that will have you in stitches. Rumours abound of a potential fourth season and even a movie; but for now this is the definitive collection. On the DVD:The Family Guy Collectionpresents the episodes on discs as they appeared in the original three box sets, with no extra features nor anything as useful as a "Play All" facility. Two bonus discs contain all the additional material: here 14 episodes have optional chatty, laid-back commentaries from MacFarlane and other members of the creative team. MacFarlane also appears in the short featurettes, talking about the show's creation and its interminable censorship problems. The rough-and-ready original pilot is also here, as well as animatic storyboards for selected scenes and seven TV promo spots. While the extra features alone are unlikely to tempt anyone who already has the series box sets, those who have only sampledFamily Guyso far will not want to miss this opportunity to own every joyous episode. --Mark Walker

Family Guy is a cartoon comedy about a family living in the fictional town of Quahog. The family includes Peter (dad), Lois (mum), Meg, Chris and Stewie (kids) Griffin and their intelligent pet dog Brian.
Peter is a guy who spends most of his time down the pub with his friends Quagmire, Cleveland and Joe instead of paying attention to his family. Lois is the typical housewife who juggles housework, kids and a social life in a busy daytime schedule. Chris isnt the brightest of kids, and has an evil monkey living in his bedroom closet. Meg strives to be popular and beautiful but is ridiculed by classmates, and sometimes her family. Brian is a talking dog who shows a lot of intelligence. Stewie is a talking one year old baby with an american football shaped head who is obsessed with killing his mother, Lois. He too shows great intelligence at times, but also shows that he is still a baby.
The show generally makes fun of popular culture and tends to cut away from the plot often to show a totally unrelated scene usually delivering a funny one-liner. Even though the show focuses around the Griffin family, there are many more characters involved in the show, such as Sexual Pervert Glen Quagmire, Wheelchair bound cop Joe Swanson and and Pharmaceutical Store owner Mort Goldman, all with distinctive personalities and all regularly shown in episodes.
One of my favourite episodes is in Season 2 called 'The story on page 1' where Meg manages to gain an exclusive interview with the Mayor of Quahog, Adam West (Yes, Batman) and discovers that he has been wasting tax payers money. However, Peter decides that political corruption is 'old news' and makes up a 'much more interesting story' and replaces it with Meg's story. The story Peter had wrote claimed that Luke Perry was gay, which led to Luke Perry sueing the family before eventually dropping the lawsuit.
This episode opitimises all that Family Guy is, with Peter messing things up unintentionally and getting the family in a very awkward situation, Meg's life being 'ruined' by Peter's actions; as she loves Luke Perry and the classic cut away jokes.
The boxset which holds 15 discs and 5 full seasons of Family Guy also has some interesting extras. They have added an extra episode in the boxset, called 'When you wish upon a Weinstein', and has deleted scenes of other episodes. Another interesting feature is the commentary by creator Seth Macfarlane and others involved in the making of Family Guy.
There is also a mini featurette called 'World Domination: The Family Guy Phenomenon' and many other added features to explore. So, Family Guy is one of the funniest comedies around and the boxset provides you with over 700 mins in nearly 100 episodes and other features of this great animated Series, making it well worth the money to buy it.

Review of Family Guy - Series 1 To 5 - Complete (Box Set) (DVD)
Advantages: alot cheaper than buying individually Disadvantages: not as asthetically pleasing
Finally it has arrived! family guy seasons 1-5 in one handy boxset. i doubt that i need to say that family guy is probably one of the funniest and most well writeen shows to grace television in a long time. The combination of enjoyable stories, cut aways and one liners have succeeded in making this one of the most popular dvds of the last 10 years. With a barage of lovable characters such as "peter griffin" "stewie" "brian" "cleveland" and "quagmire" ... ...thing about buying all the family guy dvds in one go is that you might get tempted to watch them in the wrong order. i highly suggest that you begin at the start with series one so you can see how family guy has developed over the years otherwise theres the risk of not being able to fully appreciate the oldest episodes especially those of seasons 1 and 2. As family guy has progressed its humour has become alot more adult. series 1 and 2 are pretty ...

...true that some of the family guy series are better than others but there are so many great episodes that buying the series 1-5 boxset really is the way to go.

The family guy movie, Stewie Griffin: the untold story, isnt included in the boxset even though it is technically the last 3 episodes of series 4. I found this slightly disappointing as they are very good episodes.
When watching the dvds i watched series 4 and 5 first and i found them to be hilarious. I was not keen to watch the first 2 series' then because i discovered voices and appearances are slightly different in these. ...

DVD Description
Features series 1 to 5 of the animated TV comedy. The programme is based around the Griffin family, comprised of bumbling, well-intentioned father Peter; his sweet but oblivious wife Lois; and their teenagers, dim-witted Chris and awkward Meg. The most recognisable characters, however, remain the family's masterminds: evil genius baby Stewie, determined to achieve complete world domination at the age of one, and Brian, an erudite martini-swilling dog, the family's lone voice of reason.
