A have recently read the various series's of the cartoon, Family Guy and currently own the 4th series (above). I would even go as far to say that it is better than your legendary Simpsons or even Futurama! Read this review and I swear that you will immediately run to the shops and buy it. It's so funny.
Basically, the series of Family Guy is about a family of 5 (with the exception of a talking dog!) who live in Quahog, Rhode Island and have lots of wacky adventures there. It is more aimed to the younger generation although there is quite a lot of offensive references. Every episode consists of it's own adventure each as funny as the last. Although it was created before Futurama in 1999, Futurama did not in any way takeover Family Guy as I thought Family Guy was more grown up and slapstick which I love.
It is an American, animated comedy created by Seth MacFarlane and aired on FOX in 1999. This was banned several times in 2000 and 2002. DVD sales brought this back on air but most channels will not show this as they do not agree with it's purposes. BBC three is one of the few channels that actually air this which I think is disgraceful as lots of people like it and do enjoy it. This programme is famous for it's idiotic one-liners and 10 second scenes which are the main parts of the show. These are often by Peter.
Characters
Peter Griffin is the main character and you can easily
see why. He is definitely the funniest because of his lack of intelligence and stupidity. He has various quarrels with a mysterious chicken like thing all through the programme and this is also one of the stupidist things in the show. He is very laid back and just gets on with life as he wants to. In one episode, Peter finds out that he is retarded (obviously) and starts to act idiotic much to our enjoyment. Peter is voiced by the creator himself, Seth MacFarlane, who also voices most of the other characters including Brian (the dog), Stewie (the talking, evil baby!) and Quagmire (Peter's stupid friend). Being fat, I don't think Peter is taken seriously and I think this is the message Seth MacFarlane is trying to get across.
Meg is the smart, shaded daughter of Peter who is stuck in a deranged family of five and is obviously sick to death of the stupidity in the family. This character is voiced by Mila Kunis who took over Lacey Chabert who FOX thought never really suited the character well. She is never really accepted at school by the men which obviously has lowered her self-a-steam not to mention the grief from her family.
Lois is the wife of Peter who is always the sensible one and tries to do the right thing. She is always telling Peter off for doing various wacky things. She is played by Alex Borstein who also voices Tricia Takanawa (news reader) and Lorretta Brown (Cleveland's wife). She can sometimes be as bad as Peter when it comes to stupid behaviour as in various episodes. Like any housewife really!
Chris is the hormonic teenager who is always experimenting but occasionally gets in touch with his child-like side. He seems to follow in his father's footsteps which is never a good thing to do if your father is like Peter Griffin!! In one episode which I thought was hilarious, he goes to a school dance and gets caught drinking vodka like any teenager would do. He is voiced by the famous Seth Green who has appeared in such films as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think he fits the part perfectly.
Stewie is the evil baby probably about 2 who spites his mother and uses adult-like vocabulary. The plot of the story is that Peter nor Lois can hear him say these nasty things which I think is brilliant. As I said previously, he is also voiced by Seth MacFarlane who I think can put on an act very easily. Stewie has been known to kill people and beat up various characters which is one of the reasons I think it was put off air.
Lastly, Brian is the lonely dog who also talks and is stuck in a family (like Meg) where everyone is insane! He is unlike your ordinary pet. He often goes out and drinks in the local bar and he drives a Toyota Prius (good car) which I think is bizarre! He is secretly attracted to Lois and occasionally gets in touch with his canine side by chasing tennis balls, scratching his back etc. He is also the only one that can hear Stewie's plans for world domination which is a good concept in my eyes.
I think the reasoning behind this series was to make it as funny and as deruct as possible and it succeeded. This, I think is one of the best adultary cartoons on T.V today. The different characters and plots of the story are all structure to the series and add to the hilarity of it.
The theme song is one of the most genuine songs on T.V as it explains all the different aspects of everyday life. This passage from the song shows this in detail:
Lois: It seems today, that all you see, Is violence in movies, and sex on TV. Peter: But where are those good old-fashioned values, Both: On which we used to rely?
All: Lucky there's a Family Guy! Lucky there's a man who positively can do All the things that make us... Stewie: ...Laugh and cry! All: He's - a - Family - Guy!
Family Guy, through the years, has taken a lot of grief and critisism. As it has been banned twice before (by the same company that put it back on) Seth MacFarlane, the creator is very weary of what to put in their episodes. The plots of the story are often interupted by various scenes and gags. This type of cartoon had never been done before and I think it is so revolutionary that people in the future will follow suit. Although Family Guy holds a strong sense of continuity, I think it will soon be cancelled due to it's strong language etc. but in all respects, I hope it isn't.
I think Family Guy, in a whole, is one of the best adultary cartoons on the market and the release of the DVDs have made them more open to the public. I think Seth MacFarlane and his team will continue to make brilliant episodes and once again, shock us with their masterpieces.
Thank you for reading my review and I hope you will attempt to watch these brilliant episodes. Any critisism will be accepted.
