OK for those of you who've never seen Family Guy I'll give you a brief description. Family Guy is about a man named Peter, who each week gets himself into trouble and requires the aid of his dog and best friend Brian. Peter is joined by the rest of the family, his wife Lois and children Chris, Meg and Stewie, who by the way wants to take over the world (Even if he is only one).
Two years ago I was on a popular DVD website looking for something funny to buy when I saw Family Guy. I ordered all three of the boxsets because it looked so good. Up until that point I'd never heard of the show before. The show turned out to be great so I went online in search of more.
To my amazement the show had been axed by Fox due to poor ratings. However, due to popular DVD sales, last year the network striked back and Family Guy returned to our screens for a fourth season.
I couldn't wait for the release of the box set so I downloaded a few of the episodes. There was something different about Family Guy this time round. All the cast and characters had returned but the show seemed to have gone the way of The SImpsons. The stories just seemed too silly, e.g. Peter and Lois discover Mel Gibsons new film about Jesus in the present day, who decides to go around driving cars, smoking and using guns.
Another problem with the show is the increasing number of American based jokes. You would think that because worldwide DVD sales are so high that the writers would make it worldwide friendly like The Simpsons. However, a lot of the jokes are about old American shows or tv hosts and chat shows which us british viewers have never seen or heard of before.
Any, a few months ago the DVD boxset, which contains all season 4's 13 episodes, was released. After watching the episodes for a second time the stories aren't too bad. Yes their wacky but it just adds to the fun.
This show is at the other end of the scale compared to The Simpsons. You can expect more sex, drugs and anything else non PG.
The overall quality of the episodes is around 9/10. Like I said before the American only jokes lets it down a little. You can expect stories about Meg getting a makeover, Stewie running a cashscam business and Lois marrying Brian.
The box and dvd covers are fantastic. I really love the design, which improves on the previous design of having the episode summary inside the DVD box (hidden by DVD disc) and instead has the summary on the back of each DVD case.
Why only 13 episodes you ask? When Fox ordered new Family Guy episodes they ordered 37! Well part of the reason for returning Family Guy is because of DVD sales. There has been a lot of confusion on the internet about where Season 4 finishes and Season 5 starts. This is because Fox took the show off for a break for a few weeks and it then returned. So instead of a 22- 24 episode season you now have a season 4 and 5 of thirteen episodes each. (Lots more DVD sales for Fox to come then).
To finish off my review lets take a look at the special features. Oh wait... no special features!!! Despite huge DVD sales there are no special featurs. You get the odd episode commentary but thats it. Behind the scenes footage and other goodies would have been a bonus.
Overall the episode are good, the DVD's are good and Family Guy is back with a bang. Well worth your money but start by buying Seasons 1 - 3.
