I haven't been able to watch Family Guy the same way since South Park done a brilliant episode that actually summed up the show and made you realize the truth.
But this aside, this release is nothing more than an extended Family Guy episode shoved on a disc with a star wars marketing angle to sell it, at 45-minutes it's not even feature length despite what some comments made have made out.
But is the episode any good? Well it's mildly amusing but basically it's incredibly lazy. It's Star Wars condensed with Family Guy characters taking over the roles. Peter is Han Solo, Lois is Leia, Chris is Luke while Stewie is Darth Vader, the rest of the cast round out the other roles.
There are some good moments such as the group about to be crushed in the rubbish chute only to find a perfectly good sofa has been dumped there. Naturally Peter wants to take it and the ensuing task of getting it onto the Falcon while coming under fire is pretty good. Elsewhere you have the usual quick sketches that get sandwiched in as pop culture references.
But sadly this episode also gives a big role to the old pervert who lives on Peter's street. Frankly a paedophile in anything comedic is a big downer and not really funny. There are erection jokes related to lightsabers and various other gags that frankly are just not necessary. Some may say it's a cartoon and that you can get away with more. Yes South Park has always been more risqué but there's always been a satirical point at the end.
If you really like Family Guy then this will probably be a pleaser but honestly I could have just as easily gave it a miss.
- The DVD -
The full frame transfer on this disc is pretty good but then I'd imagine a lot of the animation comes from a digital source. The soundtrack also offers a little more punch than your usual television audio.
- Extras -
The audio commentary offers a little amusing insight into the making of the episode as various crewmembers play off each other in an organised fashion.
A 12-minute conversation between Seth McFarlane and George Lucas could be deemed as the highlight of the extras but to be honest it's fairly dull stuff.
The making of is another one of the standard interviews/clips affairs with nothing interesting to say.
Aside from that there's a trailer for what would appear to be another instalment in the offing as well as a brief clip section introducing the characters.
- Finally -
Blue Harvest is an ok watch but not really worth a single release.
