Family Guy is essentially a cartoon, currently airing on BBC3 and occassionally BBC2. It follows the eccentric life styles of the Griffin family. At its head is Peter Griffin, a rather idiotic buffoon with his long suffering but not without fault Lois. Chris and Meg are the children along with Stewie, a talking one year old with a British accent and a passion for world domination and killing his mother. Brian is the intelligent talking lush of a dog.
Normally Family Guy is 20 mins of side splitting idiotic escapism but Blue Harvest is a 47 minute tribute to all that is Star Wars.

The Griffin family are sitting around theTV when there is a blackout. In his own unique style, Peter decides to retell the Star Wars: A new Hope film, recasting the Griffin family in all the major roles. Stewie is perfect as Darth Vader.

For those fo you who don't know the Star Wars A new Hope story where have you been for the last thirty years? Here it is in brief.

Galactic Empire are the baddies with Darth Vader, stormtroopers and the ultimate weapon a ship 'Death Star'.
The Rebel Alliance are the goodies so is Princess Leia. Her ship is taken over by the Imperial Force and she tries to send plans of the Death Star to the Rebel base so they can find a flaw in the Death Star. She uses two droids and pops them off in an escape pod to Obi-wan-Kenobi, a rebel sympathiser so he can get them to the base.
But the pod crashes and is found by Luke Skywalker. R2D2, the cool android and the true hero, runs off to find Obi Wan followed by Luke and the annoying other droid.

Obi Wan teaches Luke the force which is like magic but not in a Harry Potter way and without wands.
They go to a pub meet Hans and Chewbacca.
They need a ship and Hans Solo and Chewbacca have the Millenium Falcon they head off to rescue Princess Leia via intergalatic battles and tractor beams.
Obi Wan dies and becomes a Hologram, Darth Vader destroys a planet because he has the Death Star Luke kisses Leia even though shes his SISTER. Death Star destroyed by Luke and a little ship, Darth Vader whirls around in space, Luke gets a medal.

As well as the usual cultural references that Family Guy are famous for there is also a Dirty Dancing scene with stormtroopers doing the backing vocals and references to Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles.

Im sure most of you know or have seen Star Wras so you can watch this movie and understand the references made to the franchise. Those of you who are Star Wars geeks will either love it or loathe it for completely destroying the purity of Star Wars.

Im not a major fan of Star Wars and perhaps didnt get every single joke that was layered within the movie, my partner did seem to laugh a lot more than I did. But it still is a very funny movie, worthy of the comedic talents of Family Guy.
I probably wouldn't recommend buying it BBC3 will probably show it at Christmas if not before.

Interesting fact. Blue Harvest is ruse used to describe the Star Wars films to ensure secrecy during production.

Favourite Quote: Chris (Luke): (About the Millenium Falcon) What a piece of junk!
Peter (Han): Thank you. This was my brother's. He died of leukemia. How you feel about now?
