NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
FILM ONLY REVIEW
Night of the Museum is a 2006 film that was adapted from the 1993 children's book by Milan Trenc of the same name. When I saw the line up Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson and even old timers Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney, I just knew that this was a film I wanted to watch. Night at the Museum opens with sad sack Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) about to need to relocate. ... ...he will become the new night guard. Cecil, Gus and Reginald (Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs) are the three aging and eccentric guards who are being downsized in favour of young Larry. What Larry doesn't know is that these three men have been holding down a considerably more complicated stronghold than anyone could have imagined after the sun goes down on the museum. Larry is about to find out that being a night guard is less about peace ...

Riveting Robots?
Advantages: Fun film with a strong voice cast and good animation Disadvantages: In the face of stronge competition, it doesn't quite match up
...meets an eclectic bunch of robots who show him how to survive metropolitan life. Rodney's skills are soon necessary as the evil robot, Ratchet, who is now running Bigweld threatens the survival of his new friends and potentially that of his aging parents. SO SHOULD I SEE IT? "Robots" is a great little film. I cannot honestly rate it as highly as some of my animated favourites such as Shrek, Ice Age, Kung Fu Panda or really any of the Pixars. However, ... ...the old, nuts and bolts robots with the shiny futuristic robots keeps your interest. It also goes to show that you can't judge a robot by its upgrades as the line between goodie and baddie cannot be drawn based on the appearance of a robot. The humour in the film is fairly traditional Robin Williams though with some moments of Mel Brooks (yes, that's one of the voices to look for). It is family friendly, but with the odd reference thrown in to delight ...

"I Y'am What I Y'am!"
Advantages: Nostalgic, lightly entertaining, ahead of it's time! Disadvantages: "I got millions'o emenies. And you is 10 or 12 of 'em!"
How did Popeye the Sailor become strong to the finish? Where did he come from, and what was his family like? This charming 1980 film musically explores Popeye's origins, and the quirky town of Sweet Haven with it's criminally pinioned populace. From the moment Popeye discreetly rides an ebbing storm into this odd port, we know his life will never be the same again. Street toughs and the local crime-boss, The Commodore, rule the town, and the only ... ...Williams and Shelley Duval as Popeye and Olive Oyl. "Children! They cry at you when they're young, they yell at you when they're older, they borrows from you when they's middle-aged and they leave you alone to die. Without even paying you back!" ~Poopdeck Pappy This joint production between Paramount and Disney displays a lot of talents. Harry Nillson wrote all the original songs. There is plenty to enjoy for those who are fond of musicals. The lullaby ...

Two magical games for the price of one
Advantages: Imaginative story, special effects, drum rumble Disadvantages: Duplication
This is a double DVD of two films inspired by the stories of Chris Van Allsburg. They are based on the same concept of kids playing a Board Game for real with magic and mystery, which is presumably why these two DVDs are packaged together. Zathura, according to the author, is a follow up to Jumanji. However, they are two very different films in terms of quality and interest.
Jumanji - the film
Jumanji is the story of Alan Parish who discovers and ... ...with his friend Sarah without really looking at it closely. The doom ridden saying of "Do not begin unless you intend to finish" is not noticed but then who pays such attention when you are a kid. Even if they had, they still would not have realised about the awesome power of the game. You know something is up when the pieces move on their own. Something is definitely up when he gets sucked into the game with the information "In the jungle, you must ...

By Hook or by crook
Advantages: A change from the normal Pan story Disadvantages: Poor acting and writing
Hook is a variation on the Peter Pan story, but rather than Peter being the 12 or 13 year old boy he always was, we find that Peter is a middle aged man, and a miserable one at that. Peter is now an a lawyer (no wonder he's miserable!!), spends more time concentrating on his clients than his family. He has been invited to be the key speaker at a function to honour Wendy, who's now an elderly lady who's devoted her life to helping orphans and Great ... ...a message from Captain James Hook pinned to the door. Hook wants a showdown with Peter and instructs him to return to Neverland to save his children. Peter of course, cannot remember Hook, and although Wendy tries to explain, he refuses to believe that he is Peter Pan. He calls the police, who put the disappearance down to a prank, based on the family connection to J. M. Barrie and the Peter Pan 'stories'. During the night, Peter attempts to sleep ...
