Thumpity Thump Thump, Look at Frosty Go!
Advantages: wonderful presentation with extras of the 1969 original special Disadvantages: rather trite and PC non Rankin Bass sequel
...another holiday hit, he recorded Frosty the Snowman the following year. This time, the song was about a snow man who comes to life thanks to a magic hat, plays with the local children, before "hurrying away". it proved to be the monster Christmas hit of 1950, and endeared itself into popular culture, being covered by many well known artists. In 1969, Rankin Bass took their animated talents and produced a TV special based upon the song. Unlike their ... ...is really magic, and brings Frosty to life when the children place it upon his head. of course, the magician then wants his hat back, and things get further complicated when the weather begins to warm a bit, threatening to melt the snow. Will the children be able to save Frosty, and will the magician learn the meaning of Christmas and giving? I am sure you can guess the answer to that already, especially seeing as there is a sequel on this disc. ...

...Won't you Guide My sleigh tonight?
Advantages: original Rankin Bass animagic puppet film, a couple of nice extras, not overly saccharine Disadvantages: only available as Region 1
...Sam the Snowman, we follow Rudolph from his birth, when his parents try to disguise his nose, to the discovery that he is a misfit and his subsequent humiliation by the other young reindeer. This scene will endear every child, and was especially powerful for my own 4 year old, who had been terriibly bullied at school.
Another misfit is also to hand, an elf who would rather fix teeth than make toys, and together, they conspire to run away. But Christmas ... ...to fly his sleigh. Cue Rudolph and his friend saving the day, that red nose lighting the way. There are many more characters adding to story's theme about the wonderfulness of being different, and how that makes each person special, with a miner and a yeti named Bumble, a legion of abandoned toys, as well as songs that make you want to just sing along. One of the nice things about this dvd is that it is the original, unedited 1964 version, and not ...

A movie to the max!
Advantages: characters, plot, price Disadvantages: /
...order, which meant starting with Billboard Dad. This film was made in 1998, when the girls were just twelve! It seems so long ago now, and indeed I could not fully remember the story. So for that reason, I could not wait to sit down and watch! But what was all the excitement about? Billboard Dad is set in Los Angeles. It is the story of two little girls, called Tess and Emily, and their Dad, Max. Having lost their mum not too long ago, their Dad ... ...a billboard advert for him (think 'Personals' to the max!), but behind his back. When women start to write to him he is quite shocked, unaware of his giant publicity. But when he realises what has happened, he soon comes round to the idea, if not only for his girls. Can he find somebody who can make him happy, or will the huge billboard be a figure of bad memory? When I first started watching this film now, I wasn't sure what to expect. I recall ...

His life is fantastic, his neighbours...not so fantastic
Advantages: Full of hilarious witty humour, great old-fashioned animation Disadvantages: Lots of things that are unsuitable for children, a little slow in places
...Little does he know that the farms he steals from are owned by the three meanest farmers around - Boggis, Bunce and Bean. And when the farmers find out a fox has been stealing from them, they decide to do anything it takes to get rid of the mangy fox and his family. Now Mr Fox has to fight to save, not only his own family, but the families of all the others animals nearby, whose lives he has endangered.

Mr Fox - George Clooney
Mrs Fox ... ...don’t remember ever having read the book Fantastic Mr Fox which is written by Roald Dahl, but this looked like a great classic film that I had to see.
The animation is slightly strange as it isn't modern and bright like most animation is today but it had an old-fashioned kind of feel to it. The way the characters moved and the general feel of the animation seemed old. This was the only thing that originally put me off seeing the film but it actually ...

A faithful interpretation
Advantages: Stunning, age-old story told well Disadvantages: The Ghost of Christmas Present's accent!
Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly old man who has made his money out of lending to the poor. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, dislikes him, but has no choice but to carry on working for him - he needs the money for his family, particularly Tiny Tim whose health is poor. Scrooge grudgingly allows Cratchit a day off on Christmas Day and returns home with no intention of celebrating Christmas at all. Then his former colleague, the now dead Marley, returns in ghost ... ...three spirits, who plan to show Scrooge the error of his ways before it is too late. What will the spirits show Scrooge? And will what he sees affect his lifestyle? . Like the Polar Express, this version of A Christmas Carol has been brought to us by Robert Zemeckis, who uses performance capture technology to make his films. Basically, this involves using real actors and settings to film the story, then adding techniques which make it look half real ...
