Talking Polar Bears!?!?!
Advantages: Some good special effects Disadvantages: Poor ending, repetitive, poor acting by some
...night I decided to give the Golden Compass a go. Released in December 2007 this film was based on Phillip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' books. There was a huge amount of hype and publicity surrounding the release of this film but did it live up to it's hype? In my opinion no! The Plot In this film humans souls are carried outside the body in the form of an animal called a 'demon'. These demons take many forms ranging from dogs to rats and accompany ... ...are portrayed in the film as each humans best friend. The Golden Compass is based around the story of a young orphaned girl called Lyra who resides at a college in Oxford. Many of the local children have been mysteriously disappearing and Lyra tells stories of Gobblers who she believes are responsible. Lyra's uncle Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) is with Lyra at the college at the start of the film but he departs on a voyage to the Artic Circle to find ...

Very good
Advantages: Great story, very funny Disadvantages: none
The Grinch is a film based on Dr. Zeuss' very famous book, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas". The film stars Jim Carrey as The Grinch, and was released in winter 2000, and grossed just under $350 million. The story follows the Grinch as he lives on top of Mount Crumpet, very close to the town of Whoville, where they love xmas to death. He is haunted by bad and unpleasant memories around the time of xmas, and so takes it upon himself, on xmas eve, ... ...The story is very good, as you would expect by an adaptation of a Dr. Zeuss book, and is portrayed on screen just as you would imagine it in the book. Jim Carrey is fantastic as The Grinch, as he does his usual very funny humour to great effect. I would recommend this film to anyone. Overall, 5/5 ...

Hey, you guys! It's the Goonies!
Advantages: classic, fun and adventure. Disadvantages: A wee bit dated now
...A film that stirs up the same warm feelings that Labyrinth did. That film, is of course, the goonies. Released in 1985, this film is a collaberation of Speilberg, and Colombus. So, it had to be good. Speilberg Has a way with kids films. He seems to blend in that extra touch of magic. The film is best described as an adventure, with a good whack of comedy thrown in. In fact, I think that I actually wet my pants, the first time that I watched it! Mind ... ...The plot ............................................ So, the goonies are a bunch of kids, who grew up on Goon docks, in oregon. They are pretty miserable. You see, their houses are about to be bulldozed by a local country club. Unless they find a substantial amount of cash, then they are gonna be homeless. On this particular day, they go up to the loft, and start looking through some old stuff. After a bit of general mucking about, and having fun, ...

The fat lazy lasagne loving cat hits the big screen
Advantages: Funny and appealing Disadvantages: Nothing special
...enough, because, to be honest, Garfield probably isn't either, unless he's going to get lots of lasagne as a present!
This is because Garfield is the epitome of laziness. The cartoon cat created by Jim Davis that pokes fun at cat owners and their cats is portrayed as a cool customer, quick witted and quite possibly the biggest fan of any flavour lasagne you ever did see, feline OR human! In 2004, Bill Murray provided his vocal talents as the voice ... ...her affections. We then see Garfield plot to get rid of Odie, causing the poor mutt to get into trouble with animal catchers and an evil TV producer. Garfield soon realises that his actions haven't done him any favours in terms of status among the other animals on the block, and sees if he can set things straight!
The CGI work is cleverly done, if a little bit showcased unnecessarily at times. The visual manipulation after filming of the other animals' ...

War is coming Lyra!
Advantages: Great story, great acting, great animation Disadvantages: Does not stick to the book
...SHOWING ON SKY PREMIERE (over the Christmas and New Year period)***
Several years ago I was babysitting for one of my sister's friends; at about 7.00pm I put the little girl to bed and was told that her mum always read to her, at least a chapter of her book each night and she wanted me to do the same. She told me she had been read all the Harry Potter books so far and was now listening to Philip Pullman's The Northern Lights. I sat on her bed and ... ...I had greatly enjoyed reading the book and with the recent arrival of the Harry Potter books which were widely accepted to appeal to both children and adults I decided that I too would like to read the Northern Lights. I tracked down a copy from the local library and quickly devoured the entire book, unable to put it down. I then realised that this was not a stand alone book, but was part of the Dark Materials Trilogy, comprising also of The Subtle ...
