It's a vet's life!

Advantages: Good, solid family entertainment
Disadvantages: Seeing animals sick or dying

...vet, predominantly because of watching All Creatures Great and Small. Those not yet in their 30s will probably not have heard of this series, which was broadcast in the early 1980s and is based on the books by James Herriot about his own life as a vet in the 1930s and 1940s. I was thrilled to get hold of the first series recently - unfortunately this show doesn't seem to have been rebroadcast recently, at least not on the main channels. The author ...
...have more acting jobs between All Creatures and Doctors, because I always thought he did a superb job in All Creatures. Watching it again now though, I thought his acting was a little wooden, at least to begin with, although his acting does improve towards the end of this series. His character is young and energetic, with a passion for his job. His boss is Siegfried Farnon, played by Robert Hardy. Hardy has had a variety of acting jobs in the past, ...

PAINT THE WHOLE WORLD.

Advantages: THE KIDDIES WILL LOVE WATCHING IT
Disadvantages: NOTHING

RAINBOW "Up above the streets and houses, Rainbow climbing high, Everyone can see it smiling over the sky”. “Paint the whole word with a Rainbow” First aired in 1972 and ran for an incredible 20 years and contained an astonishing 1071 episodes. The general format was, what is quite common now, where it would be on twice a week, usually for around 15 – 20 minutes. It was aimed squarely at kids and contained some iconic figures that ...
...revolved around adventures to go on, usually around the house, or more likely problems to be solved. It would always be resolved by the puppets or by a song. Cast: = Zippy Loud and opinionated and always right about everything, well in his mind. George A shy pink hippo, go figure? He was always getting into trouble. Bungle A huge brown and very clumsy bear. Very unfrightening and a bit dozey. Geoffrey The father figure of the group and ...

Chorlton finally wins out.

Advantages: Fun
Disadvantages: nothing

CHORLTON AND THE WHEELIES SERIES 3 = Recently watched this with my kids and it brought back quite a few memories. Chorlton is a happiness dragon and one day he wakes up or rather is hatched in Wheelie world. From that point on he brings light to darkness and happiness to all who meet him. He finds the wheelie people being terrorised by Fenella an evil and frankly hapless witch. She and her minions try every trick and ...
...wheelie friends. But Chorlton always prevails over all of her evil plans. You follow his adventure through 13 episodes on this DVD and kids today would love it, Guaranteed. If Chorlton had been created today the spin off in merchandise would have earned quite a bit with characters such as, Chorton himself, his friends... Zoomer, King Otto and Queen Doris, and Jenny. Equally lucrative would have been the evil ones, Fenella and her cohorts, Claptrap, ...

Bunnies do Exodus

Advantages: Groundbreaking story, remarkable cast..
Disadvantages: A little too monotone for modern tastes, perhaps?

Watership Down (1978) 93 minutes Dir: Matin Rosen Voices: John Hurt, Richard Briers, Michael Graham Cox, Ralph Richardson The book of this provided one of my fondest memories of school. Fourth year English with Mr Doyle: he introduced us to Shakespeare which I REALLY couldn’t get my head around. However, Watership Down was another matter: a story about rabbits escaping from their warren, suffering hardship on their travels and finally arriving in ...
...this turns out to be Watership Down: a hill he spies from afar. However, once they arrive it seems like a hollow victory. Hazel and his troop have no does amongst their number. No does, means no kits which means the new burrow will die out… So the search begins for females to join the group. Hazel leads an unsuccessful effort to free some captured white rabbits from the local Nuthanger farm – being nearly mauled by a cat and shot by a farmer in the ...

Kris Kringle Is Not Crackers

Advantages: original version is cleaned up and presented in original black and white
Disadvantages: remake suffers greatly when presented with the original for comparison

...as Kris is released. The miracle has not happened yet though, for that is a miracle of the heart. No, that happens on the way home, as a young Susan sees the house of her dreams on the route Kris has told them to take to avoid traffic. A house, with a cane like Kris' leaned against the chimney and a wedding proposal from Fred to one now thawed hearted Doris. Aww... Starring Maureen O' Hara as Doris, John Payne (Fred Gailey), Edmund Gwenn (Kris Kringle), ...
...is indeed a star studded affair. Natalie Wood's childhood portrayal is precociously good, with no playing for the camera or simpering and makes this a fun film to watch. Maureen O'Hara does quite well with what could have been a difficult role to play. Doris Walker is a complicated character; she is caring, yet cynical and a bit hard, yet with a centre still a bit marshmallowy if you can get past the slightly crunchy exterior. She manages to pull ...
