Plot: Two features. Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker, 'Sex And The City') has a highly unusual job in this at times cartoonish romantic comedy 'Failure To Launch': she's an interventionist. What this means is that parents of young men who are still living at home well into adulthood can hire her to date their sons, which lends the often troubled men the fortitude to strike out on their own. Trip (Matthew McConaughey) seemingly fits this description perfectly; a 35-year-old extreme sports enthusiast and boat salesman, he uses his living situation to quickly end any relationship that becomes too serious. Trip's doting mother (Kathy Bates) and quirky father (former quarterback Terry Bradshaw) hire Paula at their friends' adamant recommendation, and she sets about her tried-and-true method of winning Trip over. A few obstacles emerge, however, as Trip's buddy Ace (Justin Bartha) finds out the truth, and must be bribed by a date with Paula's hilariously hostile roommate Kit (Zooey Deschanel). Paula also discovers a few things about Trip's past that make her realise how different he is from the rest of her clients, but just as she begins to develop real feelings for him, disaster strikes. Some of the best and funniest moments in 'Failure To Launch' are provided by its supporting cast. Deschanel provides dry, intelligent humour in a subplot involving a mockingbird that's taken up residence outside her window, as well as her courtship by adoring suitor Ace. Bates as usual gives a complex performance, doing much with the part provided for her, while a game Bradshaw is appealing in his eccentricities. The film's somewhat fantastical plot is quickly eclipsed by the charm of the characters, the irresistible slapstick humour, and, in the end, heart-warming sentiment and lessons learned. Also includes 'How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days'.

Professional reviews

Review: Director Tom Dey obviously cherishes 30's comedies, and he confidently guides a screenplay that has some of the sass and bit of those oldies through the screwball rapids. Mr. McConaughey and Ms. Parker make well-matched sparring partners (New York Times, )

"How to lose a guy in 10 days" - DVD review
Review of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (Wide Screen) by  margaretbeaton

Advantages: Excellent feel-good-film
Disadvantages: None

...This film is easily one of my favourites, with a great cast and excellent storyline. I first saw it earlier this year at the cinema, and knew I'd have to own it on DVD. It's just one of those films that you can watch time and time again, and never tire of. The film stars Kate Hudson (daughter of Goldie Hawn) as Andie, a lifestyle magazine journalist, whose next article is "How to lose a guy in 10 days", for which she obviously need a guy to lose. Enter Matthew McConaughey, Ben, her unsuspecting victim, who ironically is proving to his boss that he can win a girl's heart in 10 days in order to win a major job at work. The ensuing cat-and-mouse game is hilarious, as Andie tries her hardest to shake Ben off, whilst he desperately tolerates her erratic hot/cold behaviour. The film is certain to have viewer in fits of laughter from... Read review

Review of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (Wide Screen) by  Lisab3410

Advantages: So funny, even your bloke will love it, oh the eye candy
Disadvantages: I want them to make another- but it would never be as good

...This is a brilliant romantic comedy and one of my all time favourite films. How to lose a guy in 10 days has a very clever story line whereby a 'how to' girl working for a magazine has the challenge to write an article on how to lose a guy- you guessed it in 10 days. She is challenged to do this afther friend and work mate gets in trouble at work after she's dumped- again by a bloke. It turns out that she did many things which many women do that make men run a mile. So the end result is that Andy- the how to girl has to find a guy and then drive him away in 10 days. She heads out with friends to meet this poor guy and finally bumps into Ben a guy who works in the advertising industry. Unknown to Andy he has also been given a challenge. Ben has been fighting to lead on a diamond contract. Ben tells his boss that he can make... Read review

How to lose a guy in ten days
Review of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (Wide Screen) by  watawee

Advantages: A feel good, funny romance
Disadvantages: a cliche ending

...How to lose a guy in 10 days is a typical American romantic comedy.Andy (Kate Hudson) is a gorgous journalist whose magazine column isn't producing material that her editor deems worthy of her magazine "Composure".When Andy's friend breaks up from her boyfriend after doing all the classic ways to drive a man away (call 30 times a day etc) Andy has an idea for a story "How to lose a man in 10 days". She goes out that night to find a victim in which to carry out her experiment. Since Composure magazine is the bestselling womens magazine lots of well known companys wish to advertise in it. Ben is a PR representative to big companies and when his boss gives a big client to another employee he complains. His boss tells him that it is because he isn't sensitive enough to women and if he wanted the client he would have to prove that he was. Ben... Read review
