In my idea, this is one of movies, (perhaps the only one..) that has absilutely nothing to envy to the book fron which it was developed.
(The book itself is a master work, that only a wonderful writer like Bradbury would have been capable to write.)
Above all, what strikes me more is the atmosphere of the movie. The world introduced from the movie is clearly (and willingly) false, and the thing is, in my opinion, not only due to the classical hyconograpy of the time in representing a world of the future, but also to the need to reproduce the total estrangement of that world.
The whole book is crossed from a subtle feeling: there is something strange in the air, you can perceive it, you can feel that something doesn't go well, but is difficult to understand what it should be... in the movie, also, this feeling is very well and easily perceiving!
The history, very famous ideeed, is that of a future world where people spend their time in a reciprocal interaction with a sort of global television that 'reward' who continuously look at the programs, inviting them to take part in their transmissions.
The houses are in made from a fire-proofe material, and the firemen new work is that to burn books (at 451 degrees Farnheit, of course!).
Montag (also the name is useful to increase the sensation that there must be something false in the characthers, too, as 'Montag' in German means Monday ..) Montag is a good fireman and a loyal man, who never poses questions upon his work and its role in the society.
He will begin to pose to himself some questions only when he will see an old lady who decides to die burned, not to let her books 'die' alone.
To begin in posing questions and to begin in having problems is a 'consecutio logica', above all in a world as the one in which Montag lives, that doens't allow some sort of individual freedom, but an apparently one.
Montag will discover that exists a 'world in the world', and it will begin to read. As a matter of fact, he will put himself out of the law that he always protected and served: and he will become to be what, in his society, is a rebel and a terrorist.
The movie, I repeat it, is marvelous and the feelings that it transmit to the spectator are really subtles and terrifying in the same time.
This movie is considered as a master work in fiction science movies of all times, and I totally agree.
The direction from Truffaut is something wonderful, and the interpretation of Oskar Werner (Montag), of Julie Christie (Clarisse, the daughter of the lady who kills herself with her books, and the one who will conduct Montag to discover a different reality) and of Cyril Cusak (the Montag chieftain) are also unforgettable.
Out of doubts, a movie to see!
'Fahrenheit 451', Great Britain, 1965 of Francois Truffaut with Oskar Werner, Julie Christie and Cyril Cusak.
PS: In the United States there are of counties where people burn books..

This is a good sketch of the story; but what makes Fahrenheit 451 so outstanding as a film? I haven't seen it, so far, but I really appreciate Bradbury's book. (As for Montag: I think the first day of the week represents a new creation; Guy Montag, by learning a book by hear, re-creates a world that has been lost. Also, his journey is something of a spiritual re-birth.)

I agree, the interpretation of the characters from the book, is good. Maureen

It's got some useful information in it, but I found it confusing to read - if you proof read and edit as clownfoot suggests let me know and I'll come back and take another look Zx
