I bought the Iron Giant on DVD since at that time it was really well promoted and pretty cheap. I was pretty suprised with what I actually got when I watched it. It was one of the best animation movie I've ever remembered watching! I was really suprised that the movie itself didn't make it big on the box-office! But, I guess Warner Bros realised that they made a huge mistake for not making enough promotion about the movie on the cinema, so they make that up with a brilliant DVD.

As for Vin Diesel’s performance, well the Giant is pretty monosyllabic so there isn’t a great deal to say for this, he’s very gravelly but I suspect it’s been put through a digitiser. The actual animation of the Giant is very empathic and leaves you feeling very sympathetic towards him as he makes his way, almost childlike, from an empty robot, to a caring “person”.

Kent is the comic relief and the villain of the piece...

...artist Dean(voiced by Harry Connick Jr.). Dean makes ‘art’ from scrap metal and helps his new friend Hogarth to hide the robot from both his mother and a snooping FBI agent who is determined to both prove its existence and then destroy it.
Although it sounds a little like a rehash of E.T., The Iron Giant is far more than a simple copy of an old movie. There are some heavy political messages here. Set in 50’s America at the height of the ‘Red Scare’ there are some wonderful asides at such things as Duck and Cover movies and commentary on the Russian satellite Sputnik. We learn that the robot is actually an extremely powerful weapon of war, but will only attack in the face of aggression directed towards it, perhaps illustrating that the aggressor will always receive the worst end of the bargain. However, he...
