Advantages: Looks great, sounds great, the best of Kubrick Disadvantages: That Kidman laugh
...minority that love the movie Eyes Wide Shut, I'm not trying to get you to invest cash in this movie, the chances are if you have not seen it you might not enjoy it. Strangely, or maybe not so strange this review of Stanley Kubrick's last, and in my opinion finest movie. As thus all I ask is that with some years passed since its release the next time you see the movie on TV, or are stuck for a DVD rental you give this film a shot; now all the controversy ... ...orgies, murder, and corruption; Bill's eyes are opened to exactly how sexual the world around him has become, but will he escape unscathed?
Of all the movies of the late director Stanley Kubrick, I find this movie the harshest; the reason being is that it is very real, you can see the world that Bill has stumbled upon rather unexpectedly is the sort of life that given the right circumstances you could fall into. I for one know that in my home town ...

...Full Metal Jacket. Eyes Wide Shut Title
----------------------------
I couldn’t do this review without remarking on the title. What, if anything is it supposed to portray? How can one’s eyes be wide shut? Well, for my thinking it is seeking to refer to eyes that can biologically see but are blind to actual reality. This of course would fit into the storyline as it portrays the two main stars as living life as if they can see reality but gradually ... ...of course a mask has eyes wide open but cannot in fact see anything. That might be the case but of course masks don’t have eyes at all but holes so the analogy doesn’t seem to hold. With Kubrick dead I guess we’ll never know but it is a great title for the movie. The DVD Cover
----------------------
The copy I have of this DVD is headed along the top as being from the, Stanley Kubrick Collection. I don’t think there’s a different cover but can’t ...

Advantages: imaginative piece of entertainment Disadvantages: very long film if your a fidget
I've only just seen this dvd even though it came out ages ago and was really impressed. Some people had given me the impression that the film made a lot of excuses for soft porn. however, i totally disagree with this. for those of you who haven't heard of the film its pretty star studed and includes both nicole kidman and tom cruise, so as you can imagine the acting is outstanding. these two stars are protrayed as a normal but rich london couple ... ...looks after they're young daughter kind of couple). As the film goes on cruise gets deeper and deeper into a weird sex cult, whilst kidman explores the feelings and desires she appears to have been hideing for sometime. The film is about 2.5hours long so make time to watch it, but it really doesnt seem that long when you get sucked into this weird world. the extras on the dvd aren't anything special but do provide the usual that you'd expect to see:

...If being a famous director is incentive enough for big, big stars to take off their clothes and screw, then hand me a camera, a crew, and Winona Ryder's phone number, because that's the life for me!
EyesWideShut, the latest from eccentric expatriate Stanley Kubrick, is a movie so ripe for parody, the Criterion Special Edition DVD should include a version with a laugh track.
Tragically, Stanley died just after completing this film (a savvy marketing move - are you listening, Geena Davis?). A legendary career and not even one movie with a Saturday Night Live alum! How can it be!?
Anytime somebody describes a movie as a "masterpiece" and its director as a "genius," look out. Bring your fake IQ scores, kids, not to mention your MENSA card and your "I-love-NPR-because-it's-informative-yet-whimsical" bumper sticker. No wonder...

Advantages: Hints of Kubrick's genius. Disadvantages: Apart from that... ridiculous.
...Stanley Kubrick died before he could finish editing and thus completing EyesWideShut. That is all you need to know. Before the tragic event, there was a widely held anticipation about this film. Remember, Kubrick made films without any concern for time taken or cost incurred. It just had to be right.
Full Metal Jacket took 18 months just to film, never mind the post production. 2001 was ground breaking in its time - just look at the dated rubbish that was made in that era. The Shining is in my opinion the finest film version of a Stephen King novel. Kubrick was a genius.
Let's say Leonardo Da Vinci died 90% of the way through painting the Mona Lisa. And then his assistant plucked the brush from Leo's still twitching hand and tried to cobble the finished product together because it might be worth a couple of million...

Advantages: Artsy, beautiful sets, fascinating story Disadvantages: the ending...
...I din't catch "EyesWideShut" in the cinema, but it still looks very beautiful even on the small screen. Stanley Kubrick's last work received many nominations and did win "Best Foreign Film" (French Syndicate of Film Critics) and "Best Art Movie" (Golden Slate). Was it just a hyped-up thing or a masterpiece?
This story of Bill Harford, Manhatten MD to the rich and famous, and his art curator wife Alice (she's between jobs) was a bit misrepresented in the advertising campaign. Consequently, many viewers were disappointed, especially those who expected usual Hollywood fare. "EyesWideShut" is indeed a stunningly shot art movie. It was loosely inspired by Arthur Schnitzler's "Traumnovelle" (which I've never read, but now I'm curious).
The film starts out looking like a Nicole-Kidman-Fest and yes, she doesn't only have a gorgeous...

DVD Description
Stanley Kubrick's final film is a mature, highly intelligent, thrilling masterpiece of sexual obsession and marital (in)fidelity. Tom Cruise stars as Bill Harford, a doctor who becomes obsessed with a sexual fantasy that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), confesses to him. Although the fantasy (involving a naval officer) occurred only in Alice's mind, Bill can't get it out of his own head; his obsession leads him through a series of potential sexual encounters, each one surrounded by the specter of death. His whole world threatens to unravel as he falls deeper and deeper into a web of mystery, lies, and deceit.<BR>Kubrick's film breathes with vivid blues, reds, and blacks, the threat of illicit sex and death lurking around every corner. Cruise and Kidman, who are married in real life, are utterly convincing as a happy couple suddenly forced to reexamine their faith in each other. Sidney Pollack, Todd Field, Julienne Davis, Marie Richardson, and Vinessa Shaw sparkle in minor roles. Based on the novella TRAUMNOVELLE by Arthur Schnitzler, EYES WIDE SHUT is a brilliant examination of the psychological nature of sex and marriage, of faith and faithlessness, of obsession and desire. Kubrick said that his last film (he died shortly before the film opened) was my best film ever; while that is debatable, there is no doubting that the film is a splendid finale to a glorious career.
