Review: Gervais is marvellous. (Radio Times, )
A televisual comedy masterclass. (The Observer, )
The creators of 'The Office' have struck gold again. (The Sun, )
Advantages: Another cracking comedy from Gervais & Merchant Disadvantages: Some people see it as "lesser" compared to the Office
...to the Office in that he only appeared briefly in one episode. In Extras he is Millman's acting agent, who quite simply appears to be useless, for example, once he left his office phone unplugged for two days without noticing.
Eastenders fans will also be glad to know that former character, Barry, makes a few appearances, played as he real-life self Shaun Williamson, who it would seem, has Merchant's character as his agent too...hence his lack of work since Eastenders!!
The first episode of the series involves Ben Stiller (although this is shown as episode two on the DVD) as a director of a war film in the Baltic states. It is based on a real-life story of a man who is regularly on the set. With this in mind, Gervais' character does his upmost to ask the man to get Stiller to give him a line in the film...ultimately he's successful, but that...

Advantages: Realistic story, dilemmas you can relate to, sarcastic humour, famous special guests Disadvantages: May upset people who have experienced similar problems
...Ricky Gervais' second sitcom, starring himself, as Andy Millman, Stephen Merchant as Darren Lamb - Andy's agent, and Ashley Jensen as Maggie Jacobs - Andy's best friend. Maggie and Andy are extras in various films and television shows who are desparate to find a big role in a film. Andy has great ambition - and the series reveals his struggle in finding one. It shows the diffiiicult and depressed lives some extras have, whilst being a hilarious comedy at the same time. Special guests feature in each episode, including Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Stiller. Episodes are 30 minutes long, six in the series. Extra features provide an extra laugh; including a 'making of' and Stephen Merchant's video diary. Definitely wwworth buying both for the comedy and the story line....
