The answer; artistic credibility and celebrity friends which leaves poor Maggie out in the cold now working as a background artist on Andy's breakthrough venture. When Ricky Gervais finished 'The Office', he was in an interesting position; dozens of Hollywood stars and British favourites were asking him to include them in his next project. The unprecedented success of his show meant he was in a powerful position, and one he used well.
Extras is a sitcom about (wait for it) film extras. Gervais plays Andy Millman, a lovable guy who is both very funny but also very vulnerable - a comic mix. Office co-creator Stephen Merchant also takes a role in the show, playing the idiotic agent and ex-Carphone Warehouse worker Darren Lamb.
Andy Millman is very different to David Brent, sharing only a couple of facial expressions. Millman is more down to earth, a very cynical guy with a biting sense of humour and a vulnerable desire to achieve.
Each episode sees Andy working as an extra on a film or theatre show, and stars a celebrity. The celebrity plays themselves but (this quote is from Wikipedia) 'twisted versions of themselves; an exaggerated or inverted parody of their famous public personas'.
The best episode is week 3: Kate Winslett. Kate is playing a nun in a film, but is foul mouthed and dirty which is absolutely hilarious.
Because each episode contains a different star, the quality of each episode varies depending on who is in it. Myself, I didn't much enjoy Ross Kemp or Samuel L Jackson, but Les Dennis was absolutely great, as was Kate Winslett. Ben Stiller was OK, and Patrick Stewart was just crazy funny.
The regular characters are well written and lovable, particularly Andy and Maggie, his friend. Suggestions of a romance between the two add a bit of spice to the show too.
In terms of DVD extras, we have the following:
Deleted Scenes:Never-before-seen deleted scenes featuring Kate Winslet, Samuel L. Jackson and Patrick Stewart. Over 20 minutes of exclusive outtakes. Other:"The Difficult Second Album" behind-the-scenes featurette. "Finding Leo" -- Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant?s desperate attempt to secure a guest appearance by one of Hollywood?s top celebrity?s. Advantages: Very Funny Disadvantages: Should have more extras.
that series one and two are close in how funny they are. I meant the main difference with series 2 is that Andy appears to making steps up the fame ladder and has his own sitcom(which becomes one of those sitcoms within a sitcom type thing).I would recommend getting both and this is a decent Box Set to do so. The big names in series one include: Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet and Patrick Stewart. Big names, huh? But one of the most funny and classic moments doesn't come from a massive movie star but Les Dennis in Series1.
Over in series 2 the stars include: Orlando Bloom, Sir Ian Mckellen, Daniel Radcliff and David Bowie.
On the DVDextras front, it would of course be deeply ironic if a show with the title it has, did not have many extras but thankfully its not the case. I mean theirs not as many as big blockbusters often have but a decent ...
Advantages: Hilarious and the Return of the Gervais Disadvantages: None.
When I first watched the programme the office when it was first on TV I remember thinking it was one of the funniest programmes I had seen for a long time. Every single character was pure genius and Ricky Gervais became one of the people I would love to meet. When it was announced that The Office was finishing I was a bit disappointed that Ricky had not created more as I think he is a very clever and witty man. Then last year Ricky announced he was creating a programme called Extras and I couldn't wait. Everybody went crazy over the programme and although it could not live up to the standard that is The Office I think it was one of the funniest comedies I saw on TV last year.

is Stewart seeing women with no clothes. Dennis nearly comes close with his closing scene and the punch line 'if it's up there I'll give you the money myself'.
Extras is well worth a look and I hope there's a second series in the near future.
-Good Lord!-
Extras comes in a two-disc set. The first disc houses the six episodes of this first series. It worth noting that the first episode is the Ross Kemp one. On it's broadcast they started with Ben Stiller; I don't know the reason for the difference.
Sound and vision wise it's fairly solid. The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is pretty crisp for a TV production. The stereo soundtrack serves it's purpose, as you'd expect.
-S.A.S stands for super army soldiers-
The second disc contains a decent array of extras. The out-takes run for around twenty minutes and perhaps it ...
