As promised a little while back, i said i would let you know how the DVD version of The Exorcist compares to the standard video. Christmas came early, so here goes.
Obviously the superb story is still the same, with little Reagan being possessed and subsequently being delivered through the faith of a couple of white collared chaps, but with the DVD you can opt to see the original ending. So without trying to rewrite my old op about the story itself, I'll dive into the fantastic extras you get on the DVD version.
The first point is that it's recorded on both sides of the disc, so if you acquire it, handle with care. Do you like documentaries? If you do you'll love the flip side. You get a really good interactive menu with tons of info about the film, the writer, director, cast and so on, all neatly set out in a way you can make easy use of. The actual documentary is well over an hour long and contains live chat sessions with the various cast members along with the director and editor. Some of the stories revealed add great suspense to the film
As the discussions move along we get to hear about how the original editing was done in a house with the door number 666, and about how certain people died during the making of the film on set. Even more spooky goings on when a set burns down, with nobody anywhere near it to cause the blaze. To this day no one knows how it happened. Another interesting act was when a real minister approached the guy who plays Father Karris, to give him a protective medallion and warn about what he was doing fooling with the devil.
These extras seem unending and include a gallery of originals sketches used in the making of the film, and a series of theatrical trailers that were used both recently and back in 1973 to advertise the movie's release. My favourite in this arena are the flash scenes, a sort of strobed black and white effect that really is very effective, though could be harmful to anyone who suffers fits.
It still doesn't end here. You also have 4 great trailers mixed into the attic selection including,Interview with a vampire, Beetle Juice, and Devils Advocate. In addition there is also a trailer from "Exorcist 2 Heretic" made in 1977, that continues the story with Linda Blair cast as a teenage Reagan still pursued by her original possession. Overall the DVD is by far superior and the musical score sensational.
If by chance you haven't seen the film itself and are simply looking for details of the story alone, I apologise. However there a good few ops here at ciao that will probably satisfy your needs, and if you would like to see my op on the film in general, it should be quite easy to find.
