It's a sad and sorry state of affairs when, out of the dozen or so newly released movies on offer at your cinema, Exit Wounds appears to be the most worthy choice. I guess that all depends on how old you are but my mate and I didn't want to see kiddie flicks so that was ruled out, nor romantic tosh that's been recycled fifty times, nor did we want to see stuff that was totally panned by everyone. So, we ventured along to see a nice no-brainer action flick, and everyone was happy.

The vague sense of unease I felt building up before I went and saw this eventually bloomed into full-on discomfort as scene after scene of glitch-ridden filmmaking paraded before me. It can be said that if you want an obligation-free fun-filled shoot 'em up, then this fully delivers the goods. However this movie at times descends into the diabolical and if anyone is to blame then its poor old Steven Seagal. The chap seems to be getting on in years, and even if his fight scenes don't show it too badly, when it come to actual dialogue, the bloke struggles. Seagal mumbles in a sort of dreamy monotone and shows the range of expression that a rather gloomy chunk of granite might possess.

Fortunately not everyone has his disease. Some guy who goes by the name DMX (he must be a musician) shows a bit of form and at least has an expressive face rather than just speaking lines off cue cards. Anthony Anderson continues his good work from Me, Myself and Irene with another good comic turn as the club owner TK or some such thing. Tom Arnold plays a freaky TV host who does his best to annoy the bejesus out of me, but scores some points from me because he does actually act, in a manner of speaking. There are plenty of other characters, although mostly the acting is there isn't anything to write home about. I recognised one of the guys as being Chongo out of Detroit Rock City but the rest were kinda No-name bad guy varieties.

Okay now to the story.... basically Stoner Seagal does some bad stuff (he saves Mr Vicepresident, why that was the wrong thing to do I was never quite following) and gets shifted to a rather notorious area known only as 'Precinct 15'. While getting used to his fellow workers, Stoner thinks he is onto something in the way of dirty coppers who are doing bad stuff with some of the local wheelers and dealers.

From there follows the usual, cliched and stunt-ridden bit where the baddies realise they are found out, try to put 1 million bullets into Stoner and miss everytime, which tends to result in physically impossible explosions, much diving around, and a great deal of damage being dealt to the dealers' cars and themselves, since they have difficulty hitting the side of a barn.

Included in the affray is the area commander, who just so happens to be attractive and female. It seems as though her and Stoner are going to get together until the rather pointless extinguishing of her character. I have no idea why the writers did this but it was a waste, she could have been utilised to a greater extent rather than just as eye candy.

What the dodgy cops don't know is that the people they are dealing with have a hidden agenda.... and it's actually for a good cause. I won't give details because that's just giving too much away but many smart people would be able to have a decent stab regardless. This nice little plot twist occurs a couple of times, with incidents you do not expect cropping up. Watch out for the cop you least expect to be a corruptor.

In the end, I do not know what prompted this movie to be named Exit Wounds, a much more apt name would be Everyone Dies, for rather obvious reasons. This movie is not subtle. Rather, it takes a heavy blunt object and beats you around the head until it finishes. There are some rather gruesome scenes involving sharp objects that made me cringe so if you are a bit squeamish you might not want to be going along to watch this one.

Exit Wounds is a rather cliched actioner, because we have all seen the plot before, and poor old Stoner can't catch a trick in the acting stakes. Sure, he can kinda beat 'em up with the best of them, but at least he could make a bit of an effort when he has to talk rather than kill. Good efforts from other cast members cannot resurrect what is a rather tired-looking effort.

You deserve credit for being brave enough to endure a film with Segal in it. Happy New Year to you. Nick

No wonder you can buy it on ebay for less than 2 quid then ! What a bumma - never mind, you can always make up for it by going to see 'Stuck on You' when it comes out - Matt Damon as a conjoined twin. Mmm, maybe not ! Ax
