took around the world with best friend Charley Boorman over 115 days. Their trip took them from London through locales such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, and Canada, to name a few, before ending in New York.Armed with a cameraman, McGregor and Boorman encounter separation anxiety from their families; a shifty stranger (later revealed to be Mafia) who leads them through winding dark corridors to a posh hotel room; delays at international borders; hosts who offer them animal parts for dinner; injuries, equipment breakdowns, and more. The pair also film their own video diaries, in which they voice concerns and frustrations. The result is an emotional, rich breadth of experiences, from the hardship of logistical setbacks paired with the joy of visiting the children of Chernobyl and encountering hospitable locals who insist on escorting them wherever they go. McGregor and Boorman also make witty emcees, cheerfully upbeat even when they wonder aloud if one of their gun-happy hosts is a psycho murderer. The seven-episode series concludes with their emotional ride into the Big Apple and some surprises for the pair courtesy of the show's producers.Long Way Roundmay have been an arduous once-in-a-lifetime experience, but you can't help but hope McGregor and Boorman suit up for another road trip someday. --Ellen A. Just so you know, my title is part of the song lyrics from the opening titles and I thought it was rather appropriate!
2 men…2 bikes…20,000 miles. This is the story of 2 talented actors and best friends, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman who share a passion for motorbikes, and decided to bike across the world- the long way round in 115 days. They originally set out to make the journey just as something to do; a personal challenge to each of them, and just to see if they could do it. It was also a chance for Ewan to take a break from acting. Then they decided that they may as well document it!
They had cameras on their bikes and helmets, and they also rode with a third cameraman, Claudio, filming wherever they rode and also doing their video diaries. All their footage was edited into a 7 programme series which I watched on Sky One. I loved the series, as I am a massive Ewan fan, and I was fascinated by what they were doing. So imagine how delighted I was when I came home one day to discover the DVD playing on my TV!! (thanks Dad!). And imagine how annoyed my boyfriend was when I insisted we watched it…
But anyway, the DVD is a double disk set (2 disks in one DVD box) and is the entire series, plus some extras, and these extras include: ? Photo Gallery- Woo pictures of the lovely Ewan!! Ahem… ? Extended footage of the build up and preparation to the trip. This is basically like an extra mini episode and as well as the build up, shows Ewan and Charley's first few days of travelling. ? Interviews ? There's also footage from the pair's plane trip in Alaska!
So these extras are really good; you get to see what you wouldn't have seen in the series when it was on TV.
The DVD costs £15 when ordered from the official website of www.longwayround.com, or £12.99 from www.amazon.co.uk, from the original price of £17. The running time is 5 hours and 15 minutes.
The front of the DVD depicts the photo of Ewan and Charley standing in front of a spectacular landscape with their bikes, and it's the photo that is also used on the front of the book, and on the soundtrack that's been released with all the music on which has been used in the episodes. I'm not quite sure where the photo of them was taken, but I wish I did because it looks like they're in the most amazing place! If anyone knows, please let me know?
Ok, now actually on to watching the DVD itself!! The first DVD out of the case has most of the additional features on, and the first 3 episodes out of the 7. I wish there could have been more episodes as I felt watching them was over all too quickly, but each episode lasts an hour so you did get fairly good viewing time.
The menu is easy peasy to use. The screen that pops up is a simple landscape, and once Ewan and Charley zip by on their bikes, the menu options pop up on the right. You just navigate through the options by using the left, right, up or down arrows on your remote control, and you can either select an individual episode, or select play all. If you pick an episode on its own to watch, then you will be returned back to the main menu once that one has finished.
Every episode then begins with the opening song (which I think is by the Stereophonics. However, don't quote me on that because the title track isn't actually on the official CD!), and shows clips of Ewan and Charley in different scenes throughout the series. Then, each episode starts with the same intro, you hear Charley saying "we're gona ride 20,000 miles..." You then hear Ewan and Charley saying snippets about what they're doing, plus you get to see some of the other people involved in helping to make the trip happen, like Russ and David the producers, and Claudio the cameraman.
For those of you who were wondering, the route Ewan and Charley made took them through places like Prague, Kiev, then into Russia and Siberia, through Ulaan Bataar, Magadan, then they flew to Alaska, journeyed through Canada and America, and finishing up in New York.
I'm trying not do give it the whole thing away because I don't want to ruin people's viewing of it! I really like this DVD because it's not some 2 actors who one day decided to hop on a motorbike and take a really journey on their own. The DVD shows you the months of intense planning and training they went through, and how the whole thing nearly fell through. It demonstrates all the challenges they went through, how hard they found it, and how the whole team involved, including the support team, all came together to help everyone when the going got really tough.
This is also a project where the material of the trip truly came first and the people in it second, and not the other way round which I really like. No one did it for the fame they could get out of it. And Ewan and Charley had another mini-mission throughout their trip. On the way, they had meet ups with several different UNICEF organisations in different countries, to raise awareness of the wonderful work this organisation was doing to help children in many different unfortunate circumstances. It really did open my eyes to how some poor children lived, and how all they had to help them survive was UNICEF. I was happy to see on the news a little while back of Ewan doing some work in Africa in his first proper role as a UNICEF ambassador since the Long Way Round.
I'm not quite sure what else there is to say really! This documentary really pulls you in into what the guys are doing, and how they're not doing it for their public or the publicity, but just for themselves which I think is brilliant. When they finished their journey it's quite an emotional thing to watch and I'm sure you will, like me, be a little down that the journey is over, but hey, now you can go straight back and watch the whole thing again!

Advantages: We get to see some fantastic places Disadvantages: Some people may not like the perspective given by Ewan and Charley
...conducted by Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor. Since completing this one, which took them round the world they have done another one taking them around the world the other way ‘A Long Way Down’. I personally only really saw the end of this series and then the whole of the Long Way Down series when they were on the television but really enjoyed what I saw. For this reason I decided to purchase this DVD so that I could see the whole story. This DVD ... ...of this both Charley and Ewan immediately warm to Claudio and therefore the filming process is much more relaxed and realistic. What is also nice to watch unfold and progress are Ewan and Claudio’s riding skills as neither had previously ridden in dirt terrain. What I found most interesting about the series as a whole was the fact that the boys don’t withhold anything from the audience and really do tell you exactly what they think of what they see, ...

...been a big fan of Ewan McGregor, and two Christmases I sat down and realised there was nothing on. I started to flick through the channels and found 'Long Way Round'. I wasn't a bit fan of documentaries back then, especially ones about motorbikes and going around the world, they used to bore me silly, but it was Ewan McGregor so I thought I'd give it a chance.
It is probably the most fantastic piece of documentary that I've ever seen. The Plot

After the trip was completed, Charley went on to complete The Road to Dakar which is one of the toughest races in the world. When he came home, they started ...

...storyline. If you are a Ewan Mc Gregor fan, that's a bonus, but I feel that this is incidental to the story.
As a TV series, I tried not to miss an episode and even owning the DVD set, it's difficult to get tired of watching it. This series really stands out from a lot of contemporary rubbish. As a viewer, you feel informed by what you see, but never patronised.

Advantages: exciting, you can really get into the adventure Disadvantages: It made me regret not travelling, everytime I watch it I want to explore the world.
and caused quite a bit of concern for the team. How the locals deal with the flowing rivers in their paths is truly amazing they just plough straight into the situation take it all in their stride and off they go.
So whats this series about?
EwanMcGregor and Charlie Boorman document their trip of a life time where they travelled from London to New york on motorbikes. They did this successfully by using cameras, they both had a camera in their helmets and another attached to the bikes. They were also creating video diaries although this didn?t happen too regularly. Among the places they ride through are Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia and Canada. Ewan and Charlie had Claudio who was a cameraman joining them also on a motorbike. There was a support team (David Alexanian, Russ Malkin and Jim Simak) who in off road ...
Advantages: Engaging, funny, emotional, exciting, educational Disadvantages: I want even more footage!!!
LongWayRound is the epic adventure undertaken by EwanMcGregor and CharleyBoorman in 2004 to travel from London to New York...the longway, through Europe to Far East Russia, and then across to Canada and the USA. It first aired on Sky One, and it was there that I watched it for the first time. I've been a fan of EwanMcGregor for a long time (interesting fact - he went to school with my cousin) and when I saw the adverts the show was promoted more about motorbikes than the journey, but I decided to watch it as I like him. And that, as they say, was that...I was hooked.
The original TV release was 7 episodes, each of one hour but with ad breaks, so approximately 43 minutes each in running time. The programme had me addicted right from the start. The first episode dealt mainly with the preparation for the trip, and right from ...
Advantages: More detailed than the TV series Disadvantages: Not everyones taste
This is the DVD of the first trip that EwanMcGregor and Charlie Boorman made together on motorbikes.
The DVD i am reviewing is the 2 disc set which contains both unseen and extended footage.
The trip took a long time to play and ultimately was a journey from London to New York via Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, USA and Canada.
The DVD covers the entire television series.
The way the two discs are split is disc one conatins episodes 1, 2 and 3 with the extra features. The second disc has the remaining episodes on , namely 4, 5, 6 and 7. The total running time is about 6 hours so ideally you wont want to watch them in one sitting.
The extras are the unseen material, the photo gallery and the exclusive post trip interview.
The DVD's start with the planning stage where they have to trial possible motobikes ...
