Long Way Round is the epic adventure undertaken by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman in 2004 to travel from London to New York...the long way, through Europe to Far East Russia, and then across to Canada and the USA. It first aired on Sky One, and it was there that I watched it for the first time. I've been a fan of Ewan McGregor for a long time (interesting fact - he went to school with my cousin) and when I saw the adverts the show was promoted more about motorbikes than the journey, but I decided to watch it as I like him. And that, as they say, was that...I was hooked.
The original TV release was 7 episodes, each of one hour but with ad breaks, so approximately 43 minutes each in running time. The programme had me addicted right from the start. The first episode dealt mainly with the preparation for the trip, and right from the get go there were problems for the pair and their team to overcome. As soon as one episode finished, I couldn't wait for the next week to come so I could watch the next one!
Ewan and Charley were long time friends, and once Ewan came up with this mad idea, they brought in other friends and acquaintances to help make it happen. They included their producers David Alexanian and Russ Malkin, cameramen Jim Simak and Claudio Von Planta, and numerous other based in their office in London and around the world to help them with visas, language and local customs.
The route took in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the USA and Canada. From the very beginning both Ewan and Charley were excited (and nervous) about the "rougher" parts of the route, being Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, notably the Road of Bones in Siberia. But as it turned out, these were the parts that really made the trip for them.
The friendship and camaraderie between the pair is one of the things that, for me, makes the programme what it is. They are quite different characters but that is why they work so well together under duress. Ewan and Charley went round the world on their BMW motorbikes alone with Claudio the cameraman on a third bike. There was a support crew, including David and Russ, in 4x4s, but they kept their distance for much of the journey so as the bikes were on their own. This meant that a lot of the problems the bikes came up against they had to solve on their own.
I want to say that my favourite parts are when it is just the bikes out there on their own, facing whatever they come across, but then some of the most exciting parts are later in the trip when they are forced to travel with the support crew for a while. I think though, that I will have to say that my favourite parts of the show are when Ewan and Charley are mucking about, having a laugh and just relieving the stress they are sometimes under. But then I think about the challenges they faced, the people they met...everything about this show is my favourite!
The trip took Ewan and Charley through parts of the world that most people will never travel to, and that was another thing I loved. I will probably never visit most of these places, but I got to experience the different landscapes and cultures through them - and despite being well-travelled film stars, these places were new to them to, so I saw them through the eyes of first time travellers, as I would be.
The camerawork throughout the show is excellent. Claudio rides with Ewan and Charley, and captures much of the excitement they come across, as well as some stunning shots of the people and landscapes they travel through. Jim, who travels in the 4x4s with the support crew, covers their story - which is just as exciting as the bikes. In addition to this, the guys have cameras on their bikes and in their helmets, which means that we get to see everything that happens from their perspective, an essential part of telling their story as far as I am concerned.
We also hear from Ewan and Charley's wives, mainly in the preparation segments of the programme. This also gives another perspective, that of the loving outsider who is watching their partner go off on the trip of a lifetime without them, but who is also undertaking something dangerous. I liked hearing from Eve McGregor and Olly Boorman, and it's interesting how they have slightly different takes on the trip. I don't like Eve as she's married to Ewan...but that's nothing personal against her!!!
The original DVD of the show was released in 2004, followed by a special edition which is dated 2005 but I only found it on Amazon in 2006. I have both - yes I loved it so much I was given the original DVD as soon as it came out, and then bought the special edition.
The special edition is, in my opinion, far better than the original. Instead of the original 7 episodes, it features 10, which obviously gives more running time and far more footage of the trip. It adds so much to the experience. The brilliant thing about this special extended edition is that, unlike in some releases, it is presented in chronological order, so all the footage which is not featured on the original DVD is slotted seamlessly into the running order. For example, we see a lot more of the preparation for the trip, which is featured in the first two episodes of the special edition.
As for the extras, there are some which are repeated from the original DVD, but there are a lot of new additions. Here's a list as Amazon doesn't tell you what there is:
Photo gallery Trip preparation (extra scenes) The first five days (extra scenes) "I just can't do it" (extra scenes) Glacier plane ride (extra scenes) Wrong way round (extra scenes) Interview Thoughts after the trip* Ewan and Charley talk about the dusty road and Charley's puncture* Claudio's story* Jimmy's story* Ewan talks about the title track - Long Way Down by Stereophonics* UNICEF information
* indicates not available on original edition.
The basic differences between the two DVD releases come to 3 discs instead of 2 on the special edition, and 10 hours instead of 6 hours of running time.
The extras are really worthwhile, and add a lot more perspective to the show. The extra scenes which are added here are very good, and I don't really know why they didn't just stick them into the episodes where they belong. The interviews are really in depth and you get a lot more from Ewan and Charley as they now have time to reflect on what they've achieved. It's also very interesting to hear the stories of the two cameramen, as although they feature in the episodes, we don't hear much about their experiences of the trip.
I can't rate this programme and DVD highly enough. It's funny, moving and even educational - I've even found the experiences I watched on Long Way Round to be useful in my work! I really would recommend this to you all, go buy it! Amazon currently have the special edition for £13.98, and the original for £8.48 - but really, go for the special edition. You get so much more, and anyway you'll just want more if you watch the original!
