So, I hear that Ghostbusters 3 has been in development hell for quite a while, and there is something holding it back. Ivan Reitman is obviously fed up with waiting for it to happen, so here is Evolution. Ghostbusters 3 in all but name and with no "DON'T CROSS THE BEAMS!".
I understand the movie was originally going to be a horror, this is very telling as wen you watch the film, you may jump once or twice (me and my girlfriend did), and can see where comedy has replaced "Oh my God it's eating hiom alive" moments.
The Ghostbusters theme comes from three ordinary joes (David Duchovny, Orlando Jones and Seam Wiliam Scott (I think I've gotten his name wrong) stare at a meteroite for a while (strangely, the meteor lands without mashing up the nearby town a la Armageddon) and scrape some ooze off it.
Back in Fox, er, I mean Ira (Duchovny)'s lab, the ooze grows into worms, then on into some disgusting/cute creatures, whilst the ooze from the meteor also produces some nasty specimens, from raptor-birds to scuttly spider things, and some nice surprises that are quite scary for a PG movie.
And then, of course, the military get involved, we meet the token love interest, played by Julianne Moore, and the creatures get nasty. As usual, the military prove ineffective, and it's up to the underdogs to save the world and get famous.
There are some very funny moments, if you have an appreciation for schoolboy humour like I do, some cheesy moments that are probably left over from the horror script, and some good effects. And a nice cameo from Dan Ackroyd... Ghostbusters again, y'see?
Another case of turn down logic and get a big tub of popcorn then, but what's wrong with that? And you even learn that a certain shampoo has an alien-fighting ingredient... so what does it do to your scalp???
