As Seann William Scott practises for his fireman entry exam, in the desert, a meteor crashes into the earth, just missing him, and smashes into an underground cavern. When two local science teachers (David Duchovny and Orlando Jones) hear about it they make their way to the crash site and begin investigating. At first the meteor only has a liquid coming off it but very soon plants start to grow around it and strange insects start to emerge. The dormant life that lived on the meteor as it hurtled through space has been awaken, and it’s evolving…fast.
As the creatures get bigger and more aggresive it is up to the two teachers and Scott to save their state and thus save the world. However the government arrives and try to take over the operation, but maybe the guys will have help from one of these Feds…Julianne Moore.
If you’ve seen the trailers you’ll know that this looks pretty funny, and it is. Thing is it ain’t as funny as expected. The best bit is given on the trailer (when Orlando has a bug inside him) and there aren’t many other truly laugh out loud moments.
The cast all perform well. Duchovny is always good when he’s playing the comedy role, mainly because of the difference between that and his X-Files persona. Orlando is probably the funniest although William Scott has a few good moments. Julianne Moore sends up her serious acting side brilliantly as the clumsy scientist and a small appearance from Dan Akroyd always goes down a treat.
My main quibble with this movie is the special effects. As stated in my pitch Black op, CGI done badly annoys me. The creatures are obviously CG, so much so that you don’t feel any real presence by them. The finale, which sees our heroes tackling…well I won’t give it away…is so badly done. The guys are blatantly acting in front of blue screen. It looks like something from 15 years ago, where the actors in the foreground look like they are in a totally different place to the creature in the background. It just looks shoddy. We all know it can be down well…Jurassic Park (which is now 8 years old!). Come on you SFX guys, we should be moving forwards, not backwards…Evolving if you will. (sorry!)
Despite the SFX (which to be honest shouldn’t be the main aspect of any film, plot and characters always wins) this isn’t a bad little sci fi comedy. Think Ghostbusters meets Aliens and you can’t go far wrong.
Despite it’s PG rating it is actually pretty jumpy and would scare younger children I imagine, one girl in the cinema was screaming and crying during it, so I guess it scared her…unless she was crying at the bad SFX, I know I was!
Flaws aside, this is still a pretty enjoyable experience, go and see it as we need to be cheered up these days as uplifting films are the exception and not the rule.
Sit back, laugh, cringe at the effects and smile. One to take your little brother to.

Advantages: Funny, v.good CGI, strong cast and well written. Disadvantages: Lends to other films by same director a couple of times and a couple of filler moments.
