Oh, the joy of comedy...laughter is indeed the best medicine, and it would seem that Ivan Reitman would make a fine local chemist for us all. This film had produced a reasonable amount of hype pre-release and being a cinema buff, I thought I'd give it a go. Then I saw the home page for the film...this was the clincher. A sci-fi based comedy with the usual modern day CGI was deemed to be just the hot lemon type drink required to relieve the cold symptoms of recent forays to the local UGC. 'Series 7:The Contenders'(being the last film viewed) was mediocre at best, and I needed my belief that cinema is great reaffirming.
Evolution is a film based on a script received by Ivan Reitman 5 years ago, which was reworked as a comedy. In the film, David Duchovny and Orlando Jones(who???) play best buds who teach at the local community college, and are despatched to investigate a meteor landing out of town. At the site, they come across Sean William Thomas(US teen flick king) who plays a wannabe fireman. Thomas' car was wrecked by the meteor whilst he was practising firemanly things with a lifesize doll (nudge nudge wink wink), I leave you to draw your own conclusions. Duchovny and Jones then encounter the meteor and take a sample of ooze from it. Does this sound familiar? It should! Reitman seems to have taken a couple of ideas from the 2 Ghostbuster films that he wrote, which irks a bit, but since they're his films anyway, I supposed he's allowed a little self-plagarism.
To continue, things then get interesting and quite funny too. Enter the killer from Silence of the Lambs ( whose name eludes me)as the military commander and Julianne Moore (Starling in Hannibal) as a clumsy scientist to take over the research etc... and the film turns the corner. Upto now it was mildly humourous and intruiging (I hope my spelling is right!) but then becomes very humourous, compelling and bloody jumpy!!! How dare Reitman lure me into my comfy seat in screen 10 with the promise of comedy and pretty graphics, sci-fi and a freckled ginger lass who I wouldn't kick out of bed for farting, only then to make me jump out of seat no less than 4 times! I HATE jumpy films, a curse on you Reitman and kindly behave yourself in future.
I find movie ops the hardest to write, because I hate giving away what happens on screen before you actually see it, so I will cease hereabouts and simply recommend it to you good folk, well worth upto a fiver of anyone's money. I prefer to watch comedies and dramas on dvd or video as I don't feel it necessary to see them on the big screen. This is an exception, the CGI is excellent as you would expect these days.
So fare ye well, weary travellers, and remember that if it wasn't for Reitman we wouldn't have had the excellent Ghostbusters, and would have missed out on the superb computer game of the same name, which I would love to own again, if anyone has it.
p.s. I almost forgot. There's a cameo by an actor previously seen in Reitman comedies. Could it be this actor is back to his comedic best??? You decide.
