Madonna. Singer? Actress? Icon? She has tried to be them all and has pulled them all off to a greater or lesser degree. In Evita Madonna gets to play the part she feels she was born to play, that part being Evita Peron. This role enables Madonna to combine all her major assets and prove to all the critics that she was right, nobody else could have played this role in the movie. She even managed to win a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Peron. Normally this would have pointed to at least an Oscar nomination but then again Madonna is just not the academy is she?!
Madonna though is not the only great thing about this movie. Directed by Alan Parker ( Angel Heart, The Commitments ) with his usual style and panache this film really is a feast for the senses. From the incredible sets and scenery, which really do inspire thoughts of Argentina during the revolution, to the powerful music of Webber and Rice everything is in place to create an epic movie.
The story is based on the life of Evita Peron, nee Duarte, a poor girl from the country who dreams of the big-time. Firstly as an actress who makes her way to the top by sleping around, most notably with a married travelling tango singer, slimily played by Jimmy Nail. Then as a leader when she marries the country's top political figure Jual Peron, a truly incredible performance by the master of the musicals Jonathon Pryce.
This though is no ordinary biopic as it is told through the eyes of a disgruntled Argentinian citizen Che, played by a rugged and angry Antonio Banderas. From his perspective we see that Evita was not an icon to all of Argentina and Che and Evita share the most powerful moments in the film. As there is a narrator the viewers are treated to a balanced view of Evita's rise to prominance. If there was no narrator the film would have been just another hero-worshipping biopic.
The songs are powerful, the acting of a very high standard, the sets amazing and the direction imaginative, the scene when Madonna sings Don't Cry For Me Argentina on the presidential balcony in front of thousands is truly ensemble direction at it's best. In short this is a must see epic. If only to see Madonna shine like the star she is on the big screen.
