Jet Li masquerades as Mo-kei, a weakling warrior orphaned as a child when his parents are killed by two evil Jinx warlords. Chased out of the Wu Tang compound by a leader who considers him a liability, Mo-kei (and his female protectress) find themselves trapped in a dark abyss where they stumble upon a "cooking monk" trapped in a massive boulder who holds the secret to a lost form of Shaolin kung fu. They trick him into teaching Mo-kei the secret of his "solar stance". Newly empowered, Mo-kei sets off to find his maternal grandfather, King of the Gold Lion (de factoleader of the Evil Cult), to rally his clan with the Wu Tang in order to defeat the stifling government forces and exact revenge on the terrible Jinxes.Martial Law's Sammo Hung appears as Chang San Fung, Tai Chi Master of the Wu Tang clan (Hung also choreographed the action sequences for this film). Director Wong Jing (who also helmed theGod of Gamblersseries,Hard Boiled 2, andReturn to a Better Tomorrow) just about keeps a handle on the plot and ably directs the stunning action sequences, some of which occur on battlefields swarming with soldiers. On the DVD: the main feature is presented in letterboxed format with original Cantonese dialogue and English subtitles. The print is generally of good quality but afflicted with blemishes and white flecks throughout. The subtitles are clear but their awkward translation and speed of transition serve at times to make an already convoluted plot harder to understand. It's a shame that an option to listen to a dubbed soundtrack wasn't added as the dubbed theatrical trailer (included here) enhances the daffiness of the movie. Other extras include comprehensive cast and crew filmographies and a small selection of stills. --Chris Campion
of new material since 1994. After penning 60 new songs, the reconstituted band went into the studio with longtime producer Bob Rock to chisel their brand of hard-rock bombast into the lean, mean dozen songs found here. Falling somewhere between the raw power of Electric and the sophisticated message and melody of Sonic Temple, Beyond Good and Evil pairs Ian Astbury's lofty themes of temptation and spiritual regeneration with Billy Duffy's fierce guitar attack and an antediluvian rhythm section that recalls the days when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Hard-won spiritual battles colour the sometimes-nightmarish lyrics on songs such as "American Gothic" and the spooky "Ashes and Ghosts", but just when you're about to reach for the light switch to banish the shadows, he sings a simple love song to the late and sometimes great chanteuse Nico. --Jaan Uhelszki
murders where people have been totally brainwashed by a leading cult figure. They prey on their victims leaving a bloodbath behind them. It reveals some of the dark secrets that drive these people to commit such heinous crimes. Was the Easter Islanders' cannibalism exclusively a religious rite or the expression of an urge for revenge? Or was it induced by a simple liking for human flesh that could impel a man to kill for no other reason than his desire for fresh meat.

Advantages: Good horror Disadvantages: All gets a bit daft towards the end
..., they all agree and soon Nami and three colleagues are on their way. When they arrive at the location shown on the tape, they find it to be an abandoned army base, and in order to see what they can find, they split into groups and start to explore. They are, of course, unaware that their arrival has been seen by a mysterious figure, hiding in the undergrowth and as the young friends wander round more and more of the building, there is a growing unease that they are being watched. The abandoned base holds some very unpleasant secrets and soon, Nami and her colleagues find themselves fighting for their lives.
It seems to me that Japanese horror film makers have a thing about eyes and videotapes. Evil Dead Trap must surely be the most popular one yet then, because this movie has both. Suffice it to say that, having watched this, I should...

Advantages: One hell of a ride... Disadvantages: Not for the faint-hearted
...It has to be said this film is probably not terribly well known amongst the modern day youth (all though I have no real evidence). However it is becoming increasingly more recognised and has now built up a large group of cult followers. I have to say I'm not a die-hard fan, but I do appreciate that it is a damn good example of directing genius and imagination.
Marking the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation and making a star of Bruce Campbell, the Evil Dead, directed by Sam Raimi, whose most recent enterprise has been the Spiderman Trilogy (quite a change there then), is not your average B-movie. Like many other horror films of the decade it had a rather ridiculously low budget - a mere $350, 000 (compare that to Evil Dead III's $11 million), but it is a triumphant case...

Advantages: A visual masterpiece Disadvantages: Overlong and slighly naff
...for bigger and better things as her portrayal in both movies received such acclaim; however she rejected Hollywood and stuck with smaller roles in Italian cinema.
Ian Charleson is probably best remembered for his role of Eric in Chariots of Fire and also stared in hits like Car Trouble with Julie Walters and Greystoke. Charleson was more of a stage presence and was told that his performance of Hamlet was the best that Sir Ian McKellen had ever seen. Charleson openly came out as being gay no sooner had Chariots of Fire hit the screen. When he accepted the Role in Terror at the Opera he was feeling quite ill and realised that something was seriously wrong. Charleson vowed to do something far removed from his previous work and was a big fan of Dario Argento so continued with the project. Shortly after filming he fell even more ill was diagnosed...
