So, in my humble opinion, I definitely feel that Poltergeist has stood the test of time when many horror thrillers have failed miserably. My friends and I agreed after the showing in theaters that the film---as well as the effects---stood up triumphantly, and that it remained just as potent and effective.
My only regret, which I must mention to warn all of you, is finding out shortly afterward that indeed the rumors are unfortunately true: in 2009, Poltergeist: In the Shadows, the fourth film in the series might be coming out (it's in development at the moment at MGM). ...This film is a comedy with a difference, as Woody Allen wrote, directed and starred in it and poured his alternative humour and eccentricity into the screenplay. According to credits and the international trailer featured on the DVD I own the film is based on a book called EverythingYou Wanted To KnowAbout Sex by Dr David Reuben. When I first heard of the film I thought this most bizarre, basing a film for widespread cinematic viewing on a book written by a medical doctor that would probably not be read by the majority of its viewers, but I had assumed that the book would be written in a style that those without medical training could understand and may feature material appropriate to be made into a film. I’ve always believed in the philosophy that comedy is all about reaction, and this film surely is all about reactions to situations that are utterly ridiculous and sometimes unbelievable. True, this is a movie, and the chances of a scenario like this happening in real life are pretty much nil. However, that’s just another reason to sit down and watch. I wouldn’t be lying in saying the first time I watched this film back in high school, I laughed almost every single second of the film, that I had to watch it a second time just to catch all that I missed…yet, there was still jokes that I missed.
