I think I should start this review to say a little something about Mr. Woody Allen. I know how many people look at him now...hes been called everything from a dirty old man to an annoying nebbish who never changes character, yet there is one thing I have to say to all those comments....So What? I don't care what he does in his private life and who he is as a person...as a filmmaker, he is a genious. Don't agree with me? That's fine, but you must remember he has probably won more awards for his films than any other filmmaker (not to mention winning Best Picture for 1977's ANNIE HALL...over STAR WARS!), to introducing many of today's biggest stars, who may not even be here if it weren't for him. Check it out:

1. Sigourney Weaver, ANNIE HALL (1977)
2. Sylvester Stallone, BANANAS (1971)
3. Jeff Goldblum, ANNIE HALL (1977)
4. Kirsten Dunst, NEW YORK STORIES (1989)
5. Seth Green, RADIO DAYS (1987)
6. Christopher Walken, ANNIE HALL (1977)
7. Edward Norton, EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU
8. Sharon Stone, STARDUST MEMORIES (1980)
9. Mariel Hemingway, MANHATTAN (1979)
10. Natasha Lyonne, EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU
11. John Turturro, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS (1986)
12. William H. Macy, RADIO DAYS (1987)
13. Mira Sorvino, MIGHTY APHRODITE (1995)
14. Tobey Maguire, DECONSTRUCTING HARRY (1997)
15. Natalie Portman, EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU

Believe it or not, but the majority of these actors made their first film with Allen. (And, yes, that is the same Seth Green from the AUSTIN POWERS movies, who played Woody Allen as a boy!). I'm not trying to make anyone change their opinions about Allen, but I hope this makes some people realize why Mr. Allen is considered one of the most respected and brilliant filmmakers who has lived, even today, most of his films haven't made all that much money...he doesnt care though. As for EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU, this is arguably Woody's most unusual and unexpected film, a musical with great actors who can't really sing...but a film that is highly enjoyable and irresistable nonetheless.

When I saw ESILY in the theater, it probably had Allen's best ensemble to date: Goldie Hawn, Edward Norton, Drew Barrymore, Alan Alda, Tim Roth, Julia Roberts, just to name a few, who prance around from Venice to Paris to New York City singing (sometime in different languages), romancing each other, blowing on each other's backs, swallowing enagagement rings, dancing in the air...having a ball, simply put. Despite the fact this is Allen movie, I can't imagine people not wanting to see this film for that cast alone. And true, not everyone loves musicals, but its more of a comedy than anything else, with a high romantic factor. Even the extras join in the fun, joining the whole cast.

The most impressive thing about this film being a musical though, it breaks all the traditional conventions of being a musical...and it's certainly more enjoyable than the "modern" musicals like MOULIN ROUGE and CHICAGO (both are fine, but way overrated). I firmly believe that there is something in this film for anyone and everyone...trust me, you'll love it. An Allen film for with something everyone? At least all the people I know that despise Mr. Allen agree.
