The focus of the film isn't always tight enough on generating the laughs, and Carell is surprisingly under-used. He's on form when the material allows him to shine, but its often (admittedly impressive) special effects that end up taking centre stage, an odd road to choose for a comedy. That said,Evan Almightyis still an enjoyable family comedy, and it's not without rewatch value. It's a fun little movie, and one that deserves extra credit for promoting Carell to top billing--that's a move long overdue. --Jon Foster

Advantages: family fun Disadvantages: no sex, swearing or violence
...own right.
Evan Baxter (Steve Carell of 40 Year Old Virgin fame) leaves his job as a Buffalo newscaster for a new life changing position as a newly elected Congressman. Determined to do good his vision is to "Change the World".
Moving his family to Virginia his world was about to change, but not in the way he planned it to. Half-heartedly Evan prays for guidance, as he knows that with great power comes great responsibility. Little does he realise ... ...clothes other than 'biblical robes' Evan to build an ARK. Steve Carrell subtly acting his heart out his slapstick capering offers many laugh out loud moments. This comedy is helped along with superb visuals from the many animal co-stars, not to mention superb one-liners from his human co-stars.
. Morgan Freeman is a very convincing 'God' and this writer would be quite happy to enter the Pearly Gates and find Morgan God awaiting me. There is a moment ...

Advantages: Funny - interesting - great special effects Disadvantages: None
...Newly elected to Congress, Evan Baxter, who was a newscaster in Buffalo, N.Y., moves to northern Virginia with his family. Once there, his political mission being to 'change the world' takes on biblical proportions when God commands him to build an ark. At first Evan thinks he's dealing with a nutcase, but when his hair and beard start growing faster than he can cut it, and when pairs of animals start following him wherever he goes, he's forced to ... ...he has no choice but to do as he's told!
Unfortunately for Evan, his wife thinks he's finally cracked under the pressure of being a congressman, and when the media become involved, Evan's life turns into the worlds biggest circus act... and he loses his wife and children.
Luckily for Evan, God has the situation under control...
'Evan Almighty', is an extraordinarily entertaining and funny movie... and is far superior to 'Bruce Almighty'. The dialogue ...

Advantages: Steve Carell, good CGI, decent enough family movie Disadvantages: Seems to try to be serious and funny, so seems perhaps a little confused
...- Introduction -
EvanAlmighty is the follow up to the Jim Carrey movie Bruce Almighty, from 2003, that stars Steve Carell (one of the Frat Pack, who you might know from the US version of The Office and popular American show Saturday Night Live as well as other movies including Little Miss Sunshine, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Dan In Real Life) as the main character, Evan Baxter, who was first introduced in the previous movie. This movie doesn't feature Jim Carrey, which put me off it a bit, I know he says he doesn't like to do sequels and it did seem to get pretty luke warm reviews but I did think that it sounded interesting enough, given the story, to be worth renting, out of curiosity, so I added it to my DVD rental list and got it this week. Here's more about it and what I thought of it.

Advantages: Good Clean comedy Disadvantages: Political Overtones but not overly so
...this is a very watchable and enjoyable comedy with lots of funny moments and can be enjoyed by all members of the family. I am not familiar with the other movie Bruce Almighty so I watched this movie with an open mind. A slow start to the movie but once its kicked in, the laughs kept coming. Steve Carrell plays a TV reporter who leaves his normal life and goes off with his family into the wilds of Virginia? where he gets a calling from God (played curiously but veryw ell by Morgan Freeman) to build an Ark according to Genesis 6.14. So he has become an extrovert Congressman and attempts to fulfil Gods wish of building an ark against opposition such as legal violations and opposition from certain fellow congressman. Question is - God says the flood will come on a certain date but will it before Noah(Evan Baxter completes construction...

Advantages: Very good special effects Disadvantages: not as funny as i thought it would be
...As a follow up to 'Bruce Almighty', Evan, a local TV news presenter, has just been elected to congress. Moving to a new house in Virginia into which moves his wife and kids, he declared in one of his congressional campaigns that he would change the world. Then one night he prays too god, asking for him to help in his mission, after encouragement by his wife.
Strange things from then on started to happen, such as his alarm going off at 6.14 without it even plugged in, and the olden' day tools which are mysteriously delivered to his address in his name, and also animals seemed to follow him wherever he went. The number 615 cropped up everywhere he went, soon enough learning that it is a verse from the bible; this verse was about Noah when he was instructed to build an ark. Soon enough appears god, commanding him to do the very same...

DVD Description
In this sequel to BRUCE ALMIGHTY, newscaster Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN) has traded in the news desk for a post in Washington as a congressman. Though his campaign was based on the idea of changing the world, Evan drives a gas-guzzling SUV and spends more time trimming his nose hair than with his three sons. When he has a strange encounter with God (Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, reprising his role from the first film), God tells him to build an ark, just as Noah did thousands of years ago. Though Evan is sceptical, he finally accepts the task after being hounded by dozens of animals that follow him, two by two. By obeying God, Evan risks his family, career, and sanity--but will a flood actually come and prove him right? EVAN ALMIGHTY is a pure family affair, a squeaky clean film that kids and parents can enjoy equally. With hundreds of animals, poop jokes are inevitable, and they're worthy of a chuckle or two. With his roles in THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and THE OFFICE, Carrell has capitalised on playing awkward characters. The (over)confident Evan is quite a change, and it's interesting to see Carrell stretch his comedic muscle. Though EVAN ALMIGHTY also features the talents of Lauren Graham (GILMORE GIRLS) and Coen Brothers favorite John Goodman, the funniest lines and delivery come from Wanda Sykes (THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE) and Jonah Hill (KNOCKED UP) as members of Evan's staff. Most of the film's jokes garner giggles, but the lines from this pair get guffaws.
