Evan Almighty [2007]

Almightyis the sequel to the huge Jim Carrey hitBruce Almighty. And while Carrey isn't on the cast list this time round, director Tom Shadyac and Morgan Freeman are among the many returnees. The focus ofEvan Almightyswitches to Carell's Evan Baxter, last seen as a newsreader but now an elected official, who is chosen by God (Freeman) to build a new ark. And this ark needs, as you'd expect, to hold two of each species on the planet. Naturally, all the people around Evan think he's gone mad, and this proves a healthy comedy mine that's well exploited.Evan Almightyisn't without a few problems, though. The focus of the film isn't always tight enough on generating the laughs, and Carell is surprisingly under-used. He's on form when the material allows him to shine, but its often (admittedly impressive) special effects that end up taking centre stage, an odd road to choose for a comedy. That said,Evan Almightyis still an enjoyable family comedy, and it's not without rewatch value. It's a fun little movie, and one that deserves extra credit for promoting Carell to top billing--that's a move long overdue. --Jon Foster

Advantages: Steve Carell, good CGI, decent enough family movie Disadvantages: Seems to try to be serious and funny, so seems perhaps a little confused

...as a family to see Evan Almighty - 2 adults and 3 children aged 8, 6 and 3. My view will not be as comprehensive as the excellent one written by ciao member ally2kc, but it will provide a slightly different viewpoint.
= DISCLAIMER =
I have not seen Bruce Almighty or the 40 Year Virgin or any other films by the director, screenwriter etc, so I am treating this as a stand alone. The thing which was not mentioned in the other review is that ... ...IS THE FILM ABOUT? =
Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell) is leaving his job as a TV anchor in Buffalo, having been elected as a congressman in Washington DC on a slogan of "Change the World". Pleased with the status, perks and prestige this brings, he drives his somewhat unwilling family to their new life in a seriously wealthy area. The children however would rather have some time with their father, and his wife prays for their family to be brought ...

Advantages: A good family film, an interesting way to tell a bible story Disadvantages: Nothing new in terms of Comedy
...to the post for Buffalo, Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) has come a long way from his days as a news anchor man. Now having moved his family to Washington in order to fulfil his promise to change the World, Baxter is in for a few surprises. While he gets settled in Washington he slots in under the wing of Congressman Long (John Goodman) to help him learn the role quicker. A chance encounter with God (Morgan Freeman), however, changes his life as God sets ... ...off the lead role of Evan Baxter very well. He adds some fairly silly, but amusing moments to the film that really suit the persona he has built up for himself in previous films and TV shows. Alongside him John Goodman is also very good. His role as the bullying congressman expecting the world from the new guy see's them building up a good on screen relationship that really plays well together.
Then of course there is Morgan Freeman as God. Perhaps ...

...heard about the release of Evan Almighty, I couldn't wait to go and see it. Unfortunately, I never did get that opportunity to enjoy the magic of the film at the cinema. Though, since then, I have fortunately seen the film. Was it as good as Bruce Almighty though?

Everything is going fantastic, Evan holding the slogan 'Change the world' for his Congress. ... ...changing the world, and Evan goes along with this idea, though its not the sort of thing he usually does.
After this, Evan finds himself facing a man who calls himself 'God', who is asking him to build an Ark out of the wood that is being delivered to his house daily. Obviously, Evan thinks this is crazy, but can God and his animals persuade Evan to do the right thing?
One of the main reasons I watched Bruce Almighty was because of the cast; Jennifer ...

...Even Almighty is a warm hearted, family film for kids of all ages. This tale with a moral, will supply lots of laugh and entertaining moments. Most of the 'gags' are visual and easily enjoyed by younger members of the family.
Released in 2007 and released on DVD as a wide screen movie, intended to be a sequel to 2003 film Bruce Almighty but can stand alone in its own right.
Evan Baxter (Steve Carell of 40 Year Old Virgin fame) leaves his job as a Buffalo newscaster for a new life changing position as a newly elected Congressman. Determined to do good his vision is to "Change the World".
Moving his family to Virginia his world was about to change, but not in the way he planned it to. Half-heartedly Evan prays for guidance, as he knows that with great power comes great responsibility. Little does he realise that his prayers...

Advantages: Good Clean comedy Disadvantages: Political Overtones but not overly so
...this is a very watchable and enjoyable comedy with lots of funny moments and can be enjoyed by all members of the family. I am not familiar with the other movie Bruce Almighty so I watched this movie with an open mind. A slow start to the movie but once its kicked in, the laughs kept coming. Steve Carrell plays a TV reporter who leaves his normal life and goes off with his family into the wilds of Virginia? where he gets a calling from God (played curiously but veryw ell by Morgan Freeman) to build an Ark according to Genesis 6.14. So he has become an extrovert Congressman and attempts to fulfil Gods wish of building an ark against opposition such as legal violations and opposition from certain fellow congressman. Question is - God says the flood will come on a certain date but will it before Noah(Evan Baxter completes construction...
