ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is an unconventional romance told in the abstract, inventive, and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Like his scripts...
more...for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works off of a relatively complex idea that is easier explained through language of film than through words. In its most basic description, Joel (Jim Carrey) is undergoing a medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). However, while he is unconscious and the procedure is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, reliving moments with Clementine for fear of losing her forever. Using disjointed sound and action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography communicates Joel's dilemma with visual hilarity. Only occasionally is the film laugh-out-loud funny; instead it is much more deeply and darkly amusing as the absurdity of the situation grows. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is nothing short of brilliant--a credit to director Michel Gondry (who has a topnotch reputation for his aesthetic music videos by artists such as Bjork). Carrey is wonderfully understated in the role of a simpleminded nice guy, and his signature goofiness is used only a handful of times. Winslet lights up the screen with her blue hair and orange sweatshirt, playing a lively free spirit and loose cannon. There are also strong supporting performances by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, along with an excellent score by Jon Brion and a peppy soundtrack including songs by E.L.O. and The Polyphonic Spree. The film's conclusion promises to satisfy viewers; it offers a beautiful metaphor for the end of a love affair that brings perfect closure to this excellent film.

I would not normally go to the cinema to see a Jim Carrey film let alone buy a dvd, but when my boyfriend said he wanted to see it I went along just to see what the fuss was about and I was quite pleasantly suprised!

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet seem an unlikely pair to have as lead roles together but they are both fantastic in this. Kate Winslet is by far the best in this film. Such a different role for her to play from her usual big box office hits (titanic, sense and sensibility, finding neverland). She plays the eccentric role of Clemetine perfectly and really makes you believe she is just like a little girl trapped inside a woman's body! It is also great to see Jim Carrey play a serious role as Joel who is completely different to the normal crazy characters like in The Mask, Bruce Almighty and Ace Ventura.

Joel and Clementine are two people who fall in love but unfortunately soon fall out of love. Clemetine then decides to have Joel surgically removed from her mind, but when he finds out he decides to do the same. It's only when he is undergoing the procedure that he realises he still loves her and doesn't want to forget her. So he starts a journey through his mind in the hope that he can bury her so deep in his mind that the people trying to remove her can't find her. It's a crazy rom-com like no other and with great support from Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson it makes a fantastic must-see movie.

The extras on this special edition dvd are great too. There are lots of interviews with Michel Gondry, the director, and with Carrey and Winslet. There are also the usual deleted scenes and audio commentary with Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, the writer. Michel Gondry does most of the talking during this but it would of been great to see a bit more of what Charlie Kaufman was thinking when writing this film. The Lacuna (the mermory erasing company) infomercial is a great watch and so is a look inside Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. Another special extra which comes with this dvd is the award winning screenplay book! A must have for all fans.

I highly recommend this film to anyone. It has to be seen to be believed!
