Drama - Director: Steve Shill, David Nutter, Danny Leiner, Tim Van Patten, Alan Taylor, Steve Buscemi, Jack Bender - Original Language: English - Classification: 18 years and over
Advantages: Thought Provoking, Excellently Acted, True. Disadvantages: Sometimes glosses over some of the court action.
...not really expecting much…
Erin Brockovich is the true story of, well, Erin Brockovich. A single divorcee, who is the mother of three young children, Matthew 8, Kate 6 and baby Beth aged 10 months. She is intelligent, witty and attractive. But many companies seem reluctant to hire her. Indeed the opening scene is that of her applying for a medical job, but being instantly dismissed, due to the clothes that she wears and the foul language she uses. ... ...example of the prejudice that Erin faces everyday; just because of the clothes she wears. She is extremely poor, with only 74 dollars in the bank, as she often screams. So after being laughed out of many more interviews, she basically bullies her way into the law firm that Ed owns. Telling him that she has three children to feed and he can sack her if it all goes wrong.
Again at work, she faces prejudice; all the other women at the office talk and ...

Advantages: good story - and true to boot; ocassionally funny; occasionally poignant Disadvantages: not very exciting and should be, Julia Roberts overdrive, cliche after cliche
...I subjected myself to watching Erin Brockovich. It is a drama, made in 2000 by Steven Soderbergh, who shot up to fame with overhyped triteness of 'Sex, Lies and Videotapes' and whose filmography includes amongst others 'Solaris', "Traffic', and 'Ocean's Eleven'. It stars Julia Roberts and Albert Finney. The film is based on a true story. I could probably safely assume that anybody reading this review with an intention to buy or rent the DVD is question ... ...STORY
Erin Brockovich is a single, unemployed, unqualified mother of three kids, who, due obviously to the total inadequacy of the American welfare system, faces destitution and humiliation (including the need to steal medicines for her children from the pharmacy). She manages to bully her way to a job of filing clerk with a lawyer's firm belonging to Ed Masry. During her filing she encounters a pro-bono file, which catches her eye. She investigates ...

Advantages: Excellent film, impressive DVD features, cheap Disadvantages: A couple of the DVD features are dispensible
INTRO
Erin Brockovich is a film I fancied seeing from the first time I watched a trailer. I think Julia Roberts is great and have enjoyed many of her films, plus the plot for this one sounded very interesting. But somehow I never managed to see it – until this week, when – after borrowing my friend’s DVD – I finally watched it over two evenings.
FILM
The film is about a remarkable woman called Erin Brockovich. Based on ... ...theatrical trailer and ‘The Real Erin Brockovich’ featurette. There are also interactive menus to select language, subtitles and scenes.
FILMOGRAPHIES
There are filmographies or ‘Talent Profiles’ of Julia Roberts, Albert Finney and Steven Soderbergh (the director). These consist of still photos alongside a brief biography and short filmography with lists of awards and Oscar nominations. This is fairly well done, but how ...

Advantages: Julia Roberts and Finney Disadvantages: few loopholes here and there
...on a true story. Erin Brockowich got a job as a clerk for a small law firm and helped in a case where corporate injustice affected people in the prime of their lives wit fatal results. That case was the biggest lawsuit, which was made in legal history. This movie might have been the best thing that has happened to Julia Roberts. She has given an excellent performance in this movie. Her performance is subdued yet it cannot be ignored. The movie was ... ...of Erin would not have been conceived by Hollywood if it really didn’t exist. The portrayal of lady who has a foul mouth, has a bad dress sense, has three kids to support from two ex husbands, and is desperately looking for a job along with an attitude to match, is not something, which would appeal the audience. But there a strong story revolving round this character which evolves because of very personality of the character. All the traits which ...

Advantages: Heart-warming and very funny Disadvantages: Julia seems to be in too many films
...re-think your wardrobe a little.
Erin Brockovich: Well as long as I have one ass instead of two I'll wear what I like if that's alright with you? You might want to re-think those ties. The case involves very poisonous chemicals in the water supply of a town which has meant many of them dying or developing cancer and similar diseases. Julia (AKA Erin) then finds out it was all the water companies fault and they have been hiding the problem for years.
... ...then fall in love dispite Erin spending all her time on the case.
The ending is fantastic with the people winning their case and Erin getting promotions within the company.
Erin is a very funny character who is very bold and dedicated to her job. She makes constant speeches about how she has no law degree but can still work hard and fight the case. Her language is probably the best bit about her with some classic lines including:
Kurt Potter (stuck ...

...'s about a professor of Art History in 1950's who is in the Wellesley College. This is a drama about growing up and life the students are stuck between intellectual freedom or freedom and breaking the rules of tradition.
I didn’t really like this film that much. I wasn't very interested even though it was nice to see how well behaved the children were.
ErinBrockovich- this is about a lady who has three children, no job and no money. She goes to a law film request she gets a job they give her a chance she then proves herself by taking a major case on and about a California power company who is accused of polluting a city's water supply. While this is going on she manages to find love with strain on her relationship she manages to help hundreds of people and makes the company pay $320 million which helps everyone for generations she also gets...

...Continuing my quest to watch all my best friend’s DVDs <grin> I borrowed Practical Magic. I often decide to watch films because of the cast and this was probably the main reason for picking this one, as I have enjoyed both Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s performances in other movies – plus there was the added bonus of Stockard Channing (Rizzo in Grease).
I was planning to review the whole DVD, as I did with ErinBrockovich, but after enduring 100 minutes of the film (in three sittings!), I really didn’t want to put myself through any more! So if you want to know what’s on the DVD, buy it yourself. I’m just reviewing the film.
The basic plot of Practical Magic is that there is a family of witches called the Owens. There is a curse which kills the man that an Owens woman falls in love with...

Advantages: Russell Crowe. Great battle scenes. Plenty of features. Disadvantages: Joaquin Phoenix. Nothing too out-there or out-of-the-ordinary.
...Opinion on 'Gladiator' tends to fluctuate very quickly. On first release, everyone loved it - even Barry Norman - correctly recognising it as a quality, rousing summer spectacle. Then everyone grew wary of it - why was this quality, rousing summer spectacle mounting an assault on the Oscars?
On a strong year at the Academy Awards, 'Gladiator' wouldn't have got a look in. But then neither would 'ErinBrockovich' or 'Chocolat'. It was the popular vote, and now all that's over, everyone loves it again. And watching the double DVD set at home, it's easy to appreciate what an earnest and lovingly crafted piece of movie-making it is. Old fashioned, honest, and exciting, 'Gladiator' will eventually replace 'Spartacus' as your Bank Holiday afternoon viewing.
It's a simple story of an honest man, unjustly punished for doing the right...

Julia Roberts reaffirms her superstar status with ERIN BROCKOVICH, an inspirational drama that is based on a true story. Roberts plays Erin Brockovich, a twice-divorced mother of three who is struggling to remain afloat. After she is involved in a car accident, she loses what should have been a lucrative settlement. Jobless and pressured, Erin convinces the attorney from her case, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), to hire her as a lawyer's assistant. She also befriends her neighbour George (Aaron Eckhart), a sexy biker whose dedication to her children appears too good to be true. As Erin settles into her job, she convinces Ed to let her pursue a case that involves the residents of a local community. Apparently, several of the townspeople have become sick with cancer and other diseases. The more that Erin investigates, the more sure she becomes of the guilt of Pacific Gas And Electric Company, an incredibly powerful corporation. Steven Soderbergh shoots BROCKOVICH with a flashy realism that allows Roberts to shine every second she appears onscreen.
