DVD Description
Erich Wolfgang Korngold is principally remembered as a composer of film music from Hollywood's golden age--his renowned scores for such films as ROBIN HOOD starring Errol Flynn and A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM-- but little is known about his life in Europe beforehand. In the years before Hollywood beckoned, he had become a musical sensation in Europe and ADVENTURES OF A WUNDERKIND, a documentary about his life, covers many of these seemingly disparate career threads. In terms of footage, home movies, photographs and private tapes are presented, along with a ten minute montage of extracts from his Warner Brothers films. Additionally, A PORTRAIT AND A CONCERT presents conductor Hugo Wolff directing two pieces of classical music that Korngold wrote while scoring for Hollywood: a cello concerto and a violin concerto.

...Introduction:
Artist profile DVDs can be extremely revealing in helping to provide a deeper perspective into what makes a particular musician "tick" and as a result listening to their recordings or concerts becomes an even more rewarding experience. The Maxim Vengerov DVD portrait - "Living the Dream" which I reviewed recently on Ciao, was a great example of a documentary which gave a real insight into his personality, family background and musical ambitions. So it was with eager anticipation that I picked up "Hilary Hahn - A Portrait".
The Artist - Hilary Hahn - violinist:
Hilary Hahn is an acclaimed American violinist who was born in 1979, she started studying the instrument at the age of 4 and after studying at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music she started her phenomenal career which has taken her around the world...

Summary:
This is a "must buy" for anyone who is a fan of conductor Claudio Abbado. If you are a keen classical music lover it also gives a fascinating insight into the artistic genius of this very special maestro. With revealing comments not only from Abbado himself, but some of his colleagues and a generous selection of concert/rehearsal clips, the DVD provides a tantalising glimpse into Abbado's complex philosophy towards music and conducting, in particular how it has deepened since his severe illness a few years ago.
Background:
Claudio Abbado is probably the world's finest living classical music conductor. He was born in Milan, Italy in 1933 and studied in Milan and then in Vienna with renowned conducting teacher Hans Swarowsky (who was also the teacher of fine conductor Zubin...

Advantages: Fun, cheesy and hilariously over the top Disadvantages: Stupid characters and acting, bad ending
...What with the recent Wolfgang Peterson remake of The Poseidon Adventure (adventurously re-titled "Poseidon") hitting the big screens and consequently sinking just as disastrously as its titular ship, I thought it would be a good idea to plunge myself into the world of 1970s disaster movies. It would seem watery tales create mixed feelings with cinema goers (some hate this film, whilst a recent survey named it as the greatest disaster film ever), but the Academy of Motion Pictures seem to love them, since this was nominated for 9 Oscars, and then of course Titanic sank all opposition, winning 11 awards from 14. So, I put my flippers on, got my rubber ring at the ready and sat down to watch (duh duh duh) "The Poseidon Adventure"!
The story (as if you don't know it already) tells of a luxury cruise liner, The Poseidon, which happens...
