This has to be one of the best films I've watched in a long time. I was about ready to give up on finding a decent family film, but this has restored my fair in film makes

Synopsis

Eragon is a farm boy, who lives with his cousin and his uncle, one day whilst out hunting he come across a strange rock (or more accurately a strange rock is almost dropped in his lap).

Later that day whilst he's working in the barn, Eragon notices the rock begin to move, and within moments a baby dragon is born. When Eragon goes to touch the dragon a light blind him, and a searing pain goes through his hand. At the same moment, the strange villager Brom, the evil King Galbatorix and the king's prisoner Princess Arya all have the same vision of the dragon.

Eragon is soon to realise that his destiny has been changed forever, and he has been entrusted with the job of defeating King Galbatorix and the shade Durza.

Cast

Ed Speleers as Eragon
Jeremy Irons as Brom
Sienna Guillory as Arya
Robert Carlyle as Durza
John Malkovich as Galbatorix
Rachel Weisz as Saphira (voice of the dragon)

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this film, at first I thought it was going to be a really slow film, but after about 10 minutes the pace picked up quite nicely, and whilst it was never fast paced until the end, it ran along just nicely. Meaning there was enough time for the kids to take in what was happening, but still fast enough so it wasn't boring for adults.

The casting was good, there are some obvious big names in there, but I'd never heard or seen Ed Speleers before. According to IMDb he beat off 180,000 applicants for the job, how accurate that is I can't say, because it seems like an awful lot of applicants. But if it's true then their search was very worthwhile, because he did an excellent job, really put a lot of soul into his acting, and out acted some of the older actors.

Jeremy Irons did a super job, as did Robert Carlyle, and the film definitely benefited for having some veteran actors in there.

The graphics and effects were also extremely well done, the fighting scenes were absolutely terrific, and the effects made them really edge of the seat stuff. My son was leaning against me and I could feel him tensing and relaxing as the fight ensued. And at the beginning the cute little dragon that popped out of the egg brought lots of awww's from my daughter.

A lot of people seem to be slating this film, but I'm not sure why, maybe they are forgetting it's a children's film, and are expecting a more complex storyline. The story would have the opportunity to be much more in depth, but then I don't think it'd be suitable for children under 13 or 14, as it is, it's suitable for most ages.

At one point I found the find reminded me a lot of StarWars, Eragon was walking around in a hooded cloak, and the scenery made me think of a young Luke or young Anakin!

DVD Extras

There isn't much in the way of extras on the DVD, an audio commentary, and some deleted/extended scenes. None of which were really anything to get excited over.
