Since starting to read the Harry Potter books a whole new world of children’s fantasy has opened up to me as I have watched a few of the children’s fantasy films lately, this one being the latest.

The film is about a 17 year old boy called Eragon who lives on a farm with his Uncle. He is out hunting one night when he discovers a massive blue stone which soon hatches out into a baby dragon. We find out that the dragon egg has been stolen from the evil King who killed all of the dragons and riders years ago and now wants this egg back. A young princess who lives with the king stole the egg and used magic to send it to Eragon.

Eragon and his dragon soon discover they have a special bond which means they can read each others thoughts and feel each others pain. Eragon has been given a mark on his hand from the Dragon which he can use to do magic.

The King is determined to get the egg back so seeks the help of his evil magician friend to find it. Eragon soon finds help from a man who lives in his village and knows all about the legend of the dragons. He tells Eragon about what has happened in the past and how he is now the chosen one to help the dragon riders fight back and defeat the evil King.

Eragon, his dragon Saphira and his new friend set off on a journey to take them to the last remaining dragon riders to explain to them about Eragon and Saphira and to start a war which will bring the King down. All is not as easy as it seems as the King and his wizard have sent creatures out after Eragon and they will not stop until Eragon and Saphira are dead.

Will Eragon be able to carry out his task and what will become of the Evil King?

I thought that this film was excellent and I was completely hooked right from the very beginning. I enjoyed the story and though it was very good and was told extremely well. The film is set on a book which I have not read so I cannot make any compression to it and if they kept to the original story or not.

Ed Speleers played the role of Eragon and I thought he did a wonderful job. Every time I saw him on the screen I thought that had seem him before but this was in fact his first film, he did star in the soap Echo Beach but I never watched that. He worked extremely well with the animated dragon and made all of the scenes together very believable. The supporting actors included John Malkovich who took the role of King Galdatorix and played a very good baddie. Also Robert Carlisle did a super job of paying the evil wizard and at times looked completely repulsive and evil. Both of these actors bought a lot to the film. Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounson and Joss Stone were also some of the other actors and actresses who stared in this British dominated film and they were all excellent in their own individual ways.

The effects in the film were excellent and everything looked very real. A lot of time and effort was put into the creating of the Dragon and she never looked out of place and I enjoyed how they did not try and make her talk and she only spoke through thoughts to Eragon, I think it would have made it less serious if the dragon did actually talk. The scenery and settings were also very good and all looked very real. There are some wonderful shots over the mountains which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The soundtrack to the film was good if not amazing as I don’t actually remember any of the tracks which were played but they were all suitable and appropriate for the places they were used and they did help set the scene and the emotions for what was happening.

The ending of the film was a pain for me as they have left it completely open for a sequel or 2 as there are more books but after looking on line they are not going to be making this until 2010 as the actors all have other commitments until them which I feel is a shame as it may be just too long for fans of the first film to really want to watch it.

The DVD which I have does have some bonus material which includes:-

Audio Commentary with Director Stefen Fangmeier
Extended and Deleted Scenes (Optional Directors Commentary)
Become the Dragon Rider videogame trailer

I have not watched any of these as I don’t want to spoil the film and find out how things were done.

The film has a running time of 99 minutes which I felt was very suitable and thought that the film moved at a nice pace from start to finish. The certificate on this film is a PG but I am going to strongly suggest that if your child gets scared easily or if under the age of 10 then you watch this film yourself first to see if find it personally suitable for their viewing. There were times in the film when I said to hubby that this should have been given a 12 certificate.

I bought this DVD for the bargain price of £3 in Tesco and I definitely think it is worth every penny!

I am going to recommend this film as I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did hubby but if buying or viewing with young children then do watch this before them and see if you think they should be watching. This is a super British dominated fantasy film!
