...And when did she become a bellydancer?
This is just one of the many topics I wish to cover in this review. Sit tight....

As with almost all of my reviews, I shan't give you much of a synopsis -I'll warn you now. Get it off IMDB, because my time's too precious to waste on what's been done before. If you really can't be bothered - Farm Boy finds dragon egg - evil king wants dragon egg - eggs hatches - boy is now dragon rider - interlude to save a princess - mysterious encounter with old man and friendly rogue - que battle scene.

Okay, so I feel that I'm being rather generous with my ratings, (four star - that's nearly five!) but this is simply because I couldn't bear to put this film below average when there is such a vast amount out there that are so much worse... The problem with Eragon isn't that it's a bad film, but that it is a terrible adaption and it is in no way what it could have been, had the producers had the slightest interest in maintaining SOME symmetry with the book - rather than making a quick buck from a film that you don't need to have read the story beforehand - and to be sincere doesn't need to have half a brain cell - to understand.

Right, down to the dirty business. The script was poorly written. I know some who would argue that the book was too, but it did at least have enough depth (for me at least) for me to believe it (despite slightly rip-off tactics with a mysteriously LOTR-like world), without it being as corny and overly clichéd as the film is at some parts. Let's face it, the whole tyrannical king who drags off helpless villagers (who despise him, by the way) to join his army has been done. A lot. A throughout the many films, books etc which deal with this phenomenon, none of them ever mention why the soldiers then continue to do his bidding - i.e. the persecution and ridicule of helpless townspeople... you'd think they'd keep their memory long enough not to do it to their own kin. Sorry, that's just a little bugbear I have about that trait in all similar stories, not just this one. Aside from that fact that Horst's sons weren't actually taken for soldiers in the book. But. Never. Mind.

Also I would like to address what the film does to several of the characters. Arya and Murtagh, to name a couple, could have had so much more depth. Not that I am necessarily condemning the performance of the actors in question... It's just that they weren't really given much to do. I actually really started to like Sienna Guillory (despite her scarce appearances and lines - in the book she is much of a focal character), and I adored the accent, and comedy that Garrett Hedlund brought to Murtagh (whether it was intentional or not). And for fear of descending into fangirl territory... he has a hot bod. (I am truly sorry. I tried to be objective.)

Also, I felt absolutely no love lost for Saphira. I didn't know you could have a dragon without personality (and an easy-come easy-go Irish lilt.) It comes to something when a film of this scale can be beaten by ye olde films such as Dragonheart (see that, it's Eragon done with more passion), simply because the characters aren't completely two-dimesional. And Sean Connery's Draco could kick Saphira's butt by sheer enthusiasm.

Anyway, admittedly there is a lot wrong with this film, but there is also quite a bit that makes it enjoyable to watch. One of them being Jeremy Irons. Though in truth he struggles along with some regrettably clichéd dialogue, he does manage to bring some charm and warm into a film that is sadly two-dimensional. The villagers and characters which I like to call two-liners (i.e. they need to be there but if they weren't you wouldn't miss them) - not least of all Joss Stone (!!!!!??????) in the most random cameo of the twenty-first century - lacked any sort of motivation, charisma or indeed personalities of their own when unconnected to the story. Does EVERYONE in this world only talk about either the current tyrannical situation or the good old days? And if so, why haven't they formed their own rebellion?

Second on the good list - the special effects - good, even excellent in some parts, particularly with Saphira's facial expressions. I won't waste time describing them as they should be seen to judge for yourself. Also, I am into textiles and costume design in the like, so personally I do enjoy any film with out of the ordinary costumes. Particularly Arya's hair with obligatory feathers and her battle armour caught my eye. Plus that one-shouldered poncho thing. Awesome. Anyone who doesn't appreciate costuming can just feel free to ignore me. Or argue. Either way, I saw that as a plus point.

Lastly, this film actually has quite a few laughs in it, albeit in unintended places - and mostly at the hero's expense. (See Eragon's hilarious arrogance as he tries to explain how he and Roran 'trained'. Brom's face is priceless.) Jokes where the laughs were choreographed by the writers however, fall a little flat, and are often laughably awful. (See Saphira's many would-be witty remarks.)

I am also afraid that the film cuts so many corners and botched up so many details - which wouldn't have been hard to include (or at least keep the same rather than changing them willy-nilly) - that a sequel that resembles anything like 'Eldest' is nigh on impossible. Not that that's a bad thing I suppose, considering the resoundingly true fact - with a few exceptions - that sequels never live up to the original. In this case that would put a sequel way, way, WAY below anything I would want to be watching. Really they made this film for the kids who were bored in the summer holidays. Easy enough to understand, watchable for adults but not exactly a cult phenomenon.

And with this I would like to conclude - for any budding film directors/screenwriters or adapters - I think I have discovered the solution to making a successful film from a book. Obviously, you will never satisfy the purists (they will niggle at ANY detail they can grab their hands on) - but the trick is to leave AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN as it was and - now heed this carefully - MORE. My example is this. In widely successful films such as The Dark Knight, LOTR etc, constant references are made to things that only readers of the books or comic fanatics will know about, and when the film comes out on DVD, avid fans can make it a sport to notice these little hidden things or at least have the details of their passion acknowledged. You gotta give the hardcore fans a nod (- better yet, you gotta be a hardcore fan yourself to direct it, or at least have several crew members who are... that should be a law. Only hardcore fans can make films from books. Why did I not run for Prime Minister??) What's more, this encourages softcore fans to become hardcore fans. In films like Eragon, there is no desire to watch again for fear of having missed something because only the bare minimum was included. That is what makes a film just a film, not an obsession.

And so my rant comes to an end. I will leave you with some of the great unanswerable questions and mysteries of Eragon: The Movie:
  • Who gave Saphira an Irish accent, when we have seen her from birth to know that she has never visited the Green Isle?
  • What the hell does Galbatorix DO all day?
  • Why do Horst, Garrow and Sloan all have really similar faces?
  • Why does Arya show no traits superior to a human - apart from the ability to quip whilst in tremendous pain - despite being an elf?
  • Where did Arya get her hoodie from?
  • What is the point of Nasuada, when they clearly won't make a sequel? (I hope.)
  • Why does Angela refer to herself in the third person?
  • Why is her name so un-mythically Angela?
  • Who the f*** IS Angela anyway?

(And just FYI, Christopher Paolini's sister is called Angela. You do the math. :-P)
