Production Year: 1983 - Science Fiction - Director: Kenneth Johnson - Original Language: English - Classification: 12 years and over - Starring: Jane Badler, Faye Grant, David Packer, Marc Singer
Advantages: Fun fantasy, good cast, great FX Disadvantages: Some wooden performances, disappointing direction
...a fantastic adventure, realised by Eragon when the 'stone' hatches a blue dragon and he realises he is destined for something far greater than being a farm boy - the life of a Dragon Rider! He embarks on a journey to find a gang of rebels known as the Varden, accompanied by an old soldier, Brom, and his dragon, Saphira.
I am not keen to reveal a great deal more of the plot, for I think it is nice in a film such as this for the viewers to come across ... ...Eragon's homeland, named Alagaesia. The land is one of fantasy, under the rule of King Galbatorix, to all intents and purposes an evil King who is a Dragon Rider himself. Galbatorix is aided by his right hand man, the evil Durza, a terrifying Shade (sorceror) who possesses immense magical powers. The King's army is made up of creatures as well as men, along with special assassins known as the Razac, vile creatures! Fighting against this tyranny is ...

Advantages: Some great effects. Disadvantages: Poor acting, direction and dreadful scripting and make-up.
...a dragon hatchling. And before Eragon knows it, he is involved in a legacy that is as old as the Empire itself. Buoyed by the success of the "Lord of the Rings" film franchise, producers have rushed in and snapped up everything that could be construed as fantasy. Unfortunately we're now seeing movies that look on a par with "Krull" and "Ladyhawke". They look better on paper than the big screen. First-time director Stefan Fangmeier was previously ... ...matter of seconds. It robs Eragon of the chance to bond with her and means the audience doesn't understand the depth of their connection. Then the boy seems to learn all manner of Elvish spells in a couple of minutes. There's no sense of time passing as we cut from one episode to the next. It appears the leads cross the entire country in a matter of hours, despite having to double back on themselves. Characters (like the hero's cousin) are introduced ...

Advantages: Jeremy Irons. Costumes. Effects. Hedlund's hot bod. (Just kidding. Or am I?) Disadvantages: Who wrote the damn script... Aha I see it was you Peter Buchman. Incompetent fool. Blegh.
...much worse... The problem with Eragon isn't that it's a bad film, but that it is a terrible adaption and it is in no way what it could have been, had the producers had the slightest interest in maintaining SOME symmetry with the book - rather than making a quick buck from a film that you don't need to have read the story beforehand - and to be sincere doesn't need to have half a brain cell - to understand.
Right, down to the dirty business. The ... ...as Dragonheart (see that, it's Eragon done with more passion), simply because the characters aren't completely two-dimesional. And Sean Connery's Draco could kick Saphira's butt by sheer enthusiasm.
Anyway, admittedly there is a lot wrong with this film, but there is also quite a bit that makes it enjoyable to watch. One of them being Jeremy Irons. Though in truth he struggles along with some regrettably clichéd dialogue, he does manage to bring ...

Advantages: Good action and soundtrack Disadvantages: Poor story and characters.
...characters and the character of Eragon made the change from farmer to dragon-rider/ warrior/ mage far too quickly and unbelievably. Furthermore, the primary antagonist, Galbatorix, gets practically no screen time at all and became a minor character, working from the shadows.

Special effects
This is the film's redeeming quality, there were some extremely impressive action scenes and the dragon was used well in these scene's as well as ... ...was done well and worked with the visual. the music was well placed and all the sound effects worked and were believable.
5/5
How does it compare to similar films?
It matches all but the best of films on action, however, it's poor, copied storyline puts it near the bottom of it's genre for plot and characters. In fairness to Stefen Fangmeier, this was his first film as a director so he should'n't be judged to harshly on it.
2/5.

Advantages: Good Effects, Easy Viewing Disadvantages: None
We have wanted to see Eragon for a long time and actually got round to it last week. The film is broadly a fantasy film and from looking at the trailers / advertising you could be forgiven for thinking it is just a "Lord of the Rings" rip of but there is more to it than that.
Yes it is, like many other films about the power of good over evil and it also features dragons but really that is where the similarites end. The movie is set in the Kingdom ... ...is where a young boy, Eragon (Ed Speleers), finds the egg whilst out hunting, and takes it home believing it to be nothing more than a very nice, shiny purple stone.
Not long after, the 'stone' hatches (it hadn't hatched before as dragon eggs only hatch when cared for by their true fated master) into a relatively cute dragon, Saphira (voiced by Rachel Weisz). As Saphira grows so does Eragons realisation that he is destined to become a dragon rider ...

Advantages: A better storyline than expected Disadvantages: Quite possibly the last ever Rocky film
...to have been included in a "Rocky" film. So then it should come as no surprise that I thoroughly recommend "Rocky Balboa" to all, although I would highly recommend that anyone who cannot remember the original "Rocky" film to revisit it before watching this so that you can appreciate the beautifully crafted first half.

Audio Commentary (Sylvester Stallone) - This really surprised me as I expected listening to Stallone for an hour and half try to give an informative, coherent commentary a bit of a chore. In fact this commentary turns out to be one of the most enjoyable I have listened to. Whilst for the most Stallone comes across with not only a real passion for the film, but also for the character which has become a huge part of his life. Interspersed with the occasional...

...of the punches you see were real punches and sure enough I think this final film does have by far the most realistic fight scenes out of all the Rocky movies. This DVD extra is both very funny and entertaining and a must see!
Trailers
********
Trailers for Rocky Balboa, Rocky and Eragon. The only one worth watching is the Rocky trailer for the 1976 film. It has the cheesiest voiceover I have ever heard and its worth watching just for laughs!
Overall I gave this film a four star rating purely because if you are not a Rocky fan you just won't enjoy as much as someone who is. If you have grown up worshipping Rocky films like me, this DVD will be a definite five star piece of entertainment for you so go and buy it now!

DVD Description
Based on the first novel in Christopher Paolini’s popular INHERITANCE trilogy, ERAGON is a fantastical adventure in a vein similar to that of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. A classic story of a quest driven by destiny and set in a land where elves, magicians, and humans live side by side, the battle between good and evil, innocence and cynicism, is taken up once again. John Malkovitch camps it up as the evil King Galbatorix, a former guardian of peace who long ago went over to the dark side. He now rules over a land from which dragons have all but disappeared, until humble farm boy Eragon (newcomer Edward Speelers) happens upon a mysterious blue object that turns out to be a dragon egg. Eragon befriends the charming dragon cub, Saphira (voiced with aplomb by Rachel Weisz), and becomes her rider, designating him as the principal warrior in the fight against evil. Jeremy Irons steals the show as the wise and mysterious old man who becomes Eragon’s mentor, guiding him through the tasks of saving a princess (Sienna Guillory) battling an evil sorcerer (Robert Carlyle, TRAINSPOTTING), and fending off hordes of the hideous Urgals. All of this will strike the seasoned fantasy viewer as familiar territory, but the formula is given life by veterans Malkovitch and Irons, as well as the young Speelers. The film was shot mostly in Hungary, whose breathtaking landscape combines to great effect with excellent cinematography. The special effects, created by LORD OF THE RINGS’ Digital Magic and STAR WARS’ Industrial Light and Magic, more than live up to the precedent set by those films, while the dragon is film’s true star.
