DVD Description
Sidney Lumet directed this film version of Peter Shaffer's dramatic play, transforming theatrical symbolism into cinematic realism. Richard Burton received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Martin Dysert, a psychiatrist determined to unravel the disturbed mind of Alan Strang (Peter Firth), a young stableboy. In a fit of rage, Strang has blinded a stable of six horses. The court then assigns Dysert to probe the young man's mind in order to understand why he committed such a violent act. But the doctor, who is battling demons of his own, wonders if he can save the boy--and whether saving him at all is the right thing to do. Joan Plowright stands out as Dora Strang, the young boy's mother.

Review: "...As good [an adaptation] as one can get on film....Beautifully, almost grandly acted, by Richard Burton..." (New York Times, p.39, 17/10/1977)
Advantages: A great film with great performances Disadvantages: Only available on Region 1 DVD at the moment
...Can you remember those times when it is announced that a lost treasure of the art world has been rediscovered? Or perhaps that a rare original first edition book has been put up for auction? Well, once in a while, something surfaces that deserves the whole world's attention. I don't mean ephemeral rubbish like 'Invasion of the Clods' or whatever it is called, rather something that is just so completely and utterly timeless.
In 1970 Anthony Shaffer, who is famous for writing the screenplay for films such as 'Frenzy' and 'The Wicker Man', and who also had a very famous twin brother (Peter Shaffer, of 'Equus' and 'Amadeus' fame), wrote a play that he intended to be a detective whodunnit. The original title was 'Anyone for Tennis?', but this was soon changed to 'Sleuth'. The original star was Anthony Quayle. It had rave reviews, but Lord...

Advantages: Wonderful black humour, atmospeheric, genuine shocks Disadvantages: Little dated in look maybe but essentially a timeless classic
...memorable.
JENNY AGUTTER - Agutter is almost something of an institution. Even by 1981, she was a well seasoned actress, being a veteran of films and television. Agutter had appeared in such films and programmes as 'The Railway Chidren' (1968,1970) and 'Equus' (1977, starring Richard Burton). Again she is still acting now. Her class as an actress shines through in 'American Werewolf'. Her performance is unblemished, as a hard working, intelligent and dedicated girl-next-door. On a superficial front, she has the looks to be an apt love interest without the overwhelming glamour which may have tarnished her credibility in the role.
WOODVINE - With a career stretching back to 1961, Woodvine deserves a mention. There is nothing outstanding about his performance, but it is authoritative and compliments the feel of the film and the performances...

...than more precisely Zac Efron as the most successful track was. Whilst all the tracks are corny and banal, there is something you shall love about them nonetheless, my favourite from the sequel being 'You are the Music in Me' although that only peaked at #31, which I am furious about!
Zac Efron has been the breakout star from High School Musical, with an appearance in the more adult musical of 'Hairspray', and has sinced been deemed at the age of twenty as a star to watch, and undoubtedly the 5'8 star is likely to be popular for all sorts of teenage roles. Infact, I'm sure in about five years time he shall be frantically trying to shake off that image in a similar way to Daniel Radcliffe, who went from Harry Potter to star in the unusual 'Equus'. Zac plays the leader of the gang, Troy Bolton, and along with all his friends at East High...
