Review: If you loved THE MATRIX, this is a must (News Of The World, 19/11/2008)
DVD Description
In a futuristic society where the government requires the people to stay tranquil and submissive by taking a psychological drug, people no longer have emotions. Because of this, there are no more wars. But when one of the enforcement agents realizes that maybe peaceful oblivion is not the answer, he thinks about overthrowing his oppressors.
Advantages: Great to watch - go get it Disadvantages: none
...Equilibrium - Starring Christian Bale, Sean Bean, Sean Pertwee, Emily Watson, Taye Diggs, William Fichtner, Angus MacFadayen.
PRICE... I found it at Amazon.co.uk for £12.59 on DVD and for £10.39 on VHS.
This is one film I was not that bothered about renting or buying for that matter, but my other half turned up with it for £8. So I settled myself down with my bottle of wine and bag of crisps to watch it with him. To my amazement it was very good, it reminded me of a mixture of films all in one, it's got a little of the Matrix, and a little George Orwell 1984, and for some reason even Blade Runner came to mind.
On the back of the DVD box it states TWO MEN. ONE BATTLE. NO COMPROMSE. This is the whole plot to the film.
Based in the 21st century and the third world war in a state called Libria, emotion is illegal and feeling...

Advantages: Slick action scenes with a dark plot which has you thinking. Disadvantages: If you like happy films, don't watch.
...I watched Equilibrium with a fair amount of scepticism as I thought it was to be another Matrix style spin off that had been done before. It isn't though. It has elements of style and grace which the Matrix has but has a storyline to set it apart.

The film is set in the near future in the aftermath of a third world war. It has been decided that in order to keep us from destroying ourselves (in the knowledge that one more war would be the “end game”) that we will have to take away exactly what it is that makes us war – emotion!
Society in “Equilibrium” is set up in a way that everyone takes an emotion inhibiting drug at certain times of the day to ensure that everyone act like...

Advantages: All action feast Disadvantages: Far fetched ending.
...Why do we war?
I mean, what is it that drives us to argue and to fight? Could it be a compulsion? Could it be that the fact that we feel makes us a walking time bomb waiting to explode? Is it possible that we can get to a stage where basic raw emotion becomes the most powerful of all weapons?
It's the beginning of the 21st century and the survivors of World War 3 have come to the conclusion that mankind would never survive a fourth war. The people didn't trust themselves, didn't trust their own basic emotions and were afraid that if they didn't do something to protect themselves, they would bring about their own destruction.
The enemy? Themselves.
The source of mans inhumanity to man? The ability to feel.
Welcome to Equilibrium.
Emotions are outlawed and the worlds population is controlled by emotion suppressing drugs...
