Having been a fan of all the scary movie movies, and generally of the whole new wave of spoof films, I must say I was very disappointed with these 2 films, the only saving grace being that having brought them in a set, they do not take up any more shelf space!
Epic Movie was a complete mishmash of spoofs, far to many to hold anytype of story, let alone comedy, Jumping from the magical remote control of "click" the lion sleeping with the children from "narnia" and Charlie's chocolate factory. The humour felt too forced and focused more on getting a reaction (which in my opinion was 99% bad) rather than the actual art of a clever spoof.
I lost count after about 10 films, what they were actually poking fun at! All in all very disappointing and messily made.
No memorable characters, no memorable jokes, Hard to follow storyline.
Date Movie on the other hand, tried only to make fun of the genre of romance, rather than hundreds of individual films, which allowed it to develop more of an actual storyline. Which although still not great, was at least bearable!
The story is about an overweight girl working in her fathers greek restaurant, and although she meets the man of her dreams (nicely named Grant Fockyerdoder) they must get through meeting eachothers parents and friends before having their big fat greek wedding!
The story is simple, and predicatable.
Alision Hannigan was the only memorable character as Julia Jones, Her performance however, I was not impressed with. This sort of role did not seem to suit her at all, and she, although memorable, was not believable.
I think this film by itself was marketed wrong. Being linked to all the "great spoof films" isn't as accurate as purhaps just a lighthearted look on romance films. Overall Epic movie got from me, 1/10 where as date movie would have been about 4/10.
