Production Year: 2004 - Comedy - Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber, Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly - Original Language: English - Classification: 15 years and over
Advantages: Cast, silly and zany, Christopher Walkens character, fairly amusing Disadvantages: Pretty slow and a bit boring/tedious at times, the comedy is pretty dark!
...becoming fed up of Tims envy and arguments ensue, which lead to her taking the kids away and leaving for a day or two.
Tim decides to spend some time in a bar, to wallow in his own misery and self pity for some time and its there that he encounters a character (as it turns out, the only other person at this rather dark and lonely seeming bar) called J-Man (played by Christopher Walken), which is quite an important character in the movie overall. ... ...mind, he encourages him to act on his thoughts and get his own back on Nick, go against the system or whatever, show him what he thinks and so on. So, having had more than enough to drink, at night time as he staggers around the Vanderpark's garden, he spots a bow and arrow and its there that the awful deed is done - he accidentally shoots Corky (the majestic white horse!), seemingly killing him!
Panicking, Tim rushes to try and hide this awful ...

Advantages: Good actors - if you look at their past performances Disadvantages: Boring, unfunny, dreadful music, no chemistry between actors
...get worse, Tim’s and Debbie’s envy increases. Will the envy spoil the friendship? Or will Tim overcome his jealousy and preserve the friendship? The rest of this alleged comedy revolves around money, friendship and the harm money can do to a friendship.

►The plot◄
The storyline is not a bad idea as such, but it is far from original. It is also very unbelievable and fairytale-like. ... ...has not been brought to life properly, which I attribute to a very weak and unfunny script. None of the jokes are original, none of the scenes warrant a laugh.
►The characters◄
Ben Stiller and Jack Black try their best to bring the movie to life. Even though they employ great acting skills when looked at in isolation from the movie, it just failed to be impressed. The main problem seems to be that Stiller and Black just do not click ...

Advantages: Christopher Walken, Rachel Weisz Disadvantages: A script with wider holes in it than the Thames
...Nick's idea. As he lets envy get the better of him his wife leaves him and he gets fired, while Nick carries on getting richer and richer. His only help comes in the form of an aging Hippy (Christopher Walken) who seems to think he can answer all of Tim's problems, but are they really the answers he's looking for.
There was part of me that from the start wanted to love this film. The cast was really quite impressive and promised so much but the ... ...matter how much I tried to like it I just couldn't see the point in the script and more importantly there was no obvious reason why it was classed as a comedy.
The direction is quite simple and seemingly just lets the film flow. Whether this is down to Levinson seeing where the actors will take the film or simply not knowing what to do with the script we will never know. I personally believe it's a little from column A and a little from B. He has ...

Advantages: None at all. Disadvantages: Unlikable characters, wandering plot, utter nonense.
...not surprised to learn that Envy sat on the shelf collecting dust for two years before it was actually released. The simple answer is that it's just not funny. If Jack Black hadn't suddenly become huge with School Of Rock, I'd expect it to still be sitting on that shelf, or if it was very, very lucky, going straight to video.
Envy centres on two best friends in menial jobs, Tim (Stiller) and Nick (Black). Nick constantly comes up with insane inventions. ... ...it could be good.
Envy didn't raise a single laugh out of me. Granted, I'm a tough sell on comedies and I'm very fussy about what I like, but this just didn't have anything at all. Now I'm sure a lot of people will find it very funny, and good luck to them, better to laugh through if possible rather than just sitting dreaming of ways to murder each character in the most gruesome way possible. Everyone involved in this film really should know better. ...

...Christopher Walken), who fuels his envy and adds more chaos to his stressed life; unwittingly kills Nick's white stallion Lucky, and almost loses his family.
The film meanders through a series of truly ridiculous and unfunny situations and then ends with a stomach-turning feel-good climax. Stiller is so annoying with his moody, dark looks and fits of childish outrage that you wish you could use the Va-Poo-Rize and make him disappear along with Black ...

...don’t have enough popcorn.
This is an amazing film which everyone MUST see at least once in their life, all the actors really got into their characters, and the rest of the backstage team made this film excellent and next to perfect.
I really, really would recommend this film to everybody, even just to stare at some of those fit actors, or envy the beauty of some of the women, like Liv Tyler (Arwen). This film is worth what you pay.
On the DVD there are some fantastic Special Features, including a short film called The Long and Short of It, directed by Sean Astin, featuring some of the extras and I belive there’s even a shot of Peter Jackson in it.
Anyway I better bring this review to an end as otherwise I may well bore you to death and I believe I have touched the main features and hopefully persuaded you to purchase this film...

Advantages: Stunning animation, magical, fairytale-like quality Disadvantages: Only 74 minutes long
...images of 'upstairs and downstairs', those served and those in service. Instead of us envying the upper classes (and, indeed, the living), we easily side with the (ironically) vibrant life of the Dead 'downstairs'.
The DVD I bought has a range of special features, all of which are worth watching. Most of them show how the animation was achieved. This includes figures being moved by tiny mechanical devices and sets which are much bigger than I expected. Each mini feature amazed me and made me admire the work that went into the film even more than I already did.
The work involved in making the Corpse Bride's veil move is incredible, for example and looks beautiful in the film, as if it is made of feathers. It was also fascinating to see how computer technology and digital cameras were used to film and edit, while still remaining true...

Sensible, hardworking Tim is climbing the managerial ladder, while daydreamer Nick can't seem to stay focused on the tasks at hand. But all of that changes when one of Nick's seemingly hairbrained ideas--a spray that makes dog poop disappear--takes off, making him filthy rich. Rather than leaving the neighborhood and his best friend, Nick turns his home into a mansion and his property into a veritable amusement park. Tim, meanwhile, laments his decision not to invest in Nick's invention early in the game, and his life begins to fall apart as envy takes over. This dark comedy directed by Barry Levinson (AVALON, TIN MEN) also stars Amy Pohler and Rachel Weisz. But it's Christopher Walken who is the real scene-stealer as a bizarre hippie-bum who befriends Tim when he's down and out, only adding to the mayhem.
