Enemy of the State was made in 1998 and was directed by Tony Scott. It stars two of Hollywood’s leading actors, Will Smith and Gene Hackman. Will, who I’m sure everyone has heard of, is well known for his humour and his role in the TV comedy series ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’. Gene is probably more famous for his roles in many hit films such as ‘Behind Enemy Lines’ and ‘Heartbreakers’. Other actors/actresses ... ...King, Jason Lee, Jake Busey and Scott Caan. In fact it is such a spectacular cast list it would be hard not to recognise them now I think, but just in case you do need a recap on who everyone is here is a little info on the cast and their characters:
*** Main cast and their characters ***
Will Smith I feel has to be mentioned first as he is one of my favourite actors of all time. He is so funny yet serious at the same time in every role I have ...

I think Kurt Cobain was the one who sang “You are not paranoid if they are really after you”. Well for all those people who believe that “Big Brother” is out there watching us – then this film confirms your suspicions.
The main thread of the story line is the campaign to legalise the surveillance of everybody and everything in the USA. The fighting force pushing this campaign is a maverick politician who has been carrying out his own illegal surveillance ... ...Agency (N.S.A.). He is even willing to resort to murder to obtain his goal, but this is unwittingly filmed by a naturist. The hunt is then on, to stop the film evidence going public.
The naturist has a chance encounter with an old friend, D.C. Attorney Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith – Men In Black) and plants the video tape on him. Fairly soon he becomes the target of a NSA surveillance operative team, who do everything using fair means or foul ...

Advantages: Fast-paced, tense, action-packed Disadvantages: A bit predictable, no Will Smith title song, unfortunately
...not yet seen it.
Enemy Of The State is a fast-moving, paranoid techno-thriller from the Jerry Bruckheimer stable. Directed by Brit Tony Scott (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, True Romance), it stars Will Smith as the ordinary lawyer whose life is torn apart after a chance meeting with an old school friend.
In the prologue, the shadowy National Security Agency (headed by a splendidly sinister Jon Voight as Reynolds) murder a senator at a deserted lakeside ... ...piece of legislation allowing the NSA complete freedom to spy on anyone and everyone.
However the murder is unwittingly caught on camera by duck watcher Zavitz (Jason Lee) who is spotted collecting his tape by an NSA heavy. Soon the chase is on, and a frantic Zavitz secretly drops the tape into his old friend Robert Dean's (Smith) shopping bag after a chance encounter in a store.
Dean is a hot-shot lawyer with a top job, beautiful wife and son, ...

Advantages: extras and Gene Hackman Disadvantages: some actors
Did you ever have the feeling someone was watching you? The atmosphere of paranoia is rampant in "Enemy of the State" as it takes the notion to the extreme. It's a high-tech, high-energy version of "North By Northwest" for the nineties, with none of the latter film's subtlety or grace. It tries to be topical by questioning whether the government should be allowed to compromise the public's right to privacy if the public welfare is at stake. But it ... ...plot actions well out of proportion to the question. In other words, it takes the serious issue of Big Brother monitoring us and turns it into typical Hollywood hokum. Nonetheless, as standard conspiracy films go, this one is a cut above the rest thanks to director Tony Scott's nonstop forward thrust. It's a respectable suspense thriller.
Will Smith stars as a Washington attorney, Robert Clayton Dean. He inadvertently gets passed a video that a ...

...another top notch contribution to Enemy Of The State, a wonderfully tense and oh-so satisfying thriller which also features Gene Hackman in a typical irascible role and Jon Voight as the sort of hateful baddie which he has made such a trademark of in recent years.
However, EOTS is so much more than just a high class thriller which drags you in and absorbs you through right through to its conclusion - it's a deep comment thang with a barbed critique ... ...of A, which isn't very subtle but is totally clenched fist and taut in its approach throughout.
Smith is a well to do lawyer (Robert Dean) who gets dragged in against his will to a battle seemingly to the death against the full overblown power of the State, with little chance of succeeding in that struggle.
Jason Robards plays a congressman who is killed in the opening few moments of the film on the orders of Thomas Reynolds (Voight), a high profile ...

...Enemy of the State stars Will Smith as an attorney in America who represents a big chunk of Mafia families, criminals and all manner of people, until he meets an old friend...
All the big names are in this one. Not only Will Smith from films like Men In Black, but Jack Black, Seth Green and Jason Lee from My Name is Earl all make apperences in this picture. It really is packed in there.
And stil the quality is not effected. The plot thickens as the movie goes on, and Smith finds himself running from the NSA and a whole host of other people. This leads to some spectacular stunts and big explosions.
The plot is based around the death of a State congressman, who appears to have died due to a heart attack. But when a bird watcher at the local pond catches the death on video tape, things start to turn nasty for the once innocent...

DVD Description
Robert Dean (Will Smith) is a labor lawyer who is unknowingly in possession of evidence related to a serious politically motivated crime. Government agents eager to hide their guilt believe that Dean is on to them, and proceed to turn his life upside-down, ruin his reputation, and frame him for various incidents, thanks to the latest in high-tech government surveillance techniques. In an attempt to clear his name and reclaim his life, Dean teams up with the reclusive Brill (Gene Hackman), a former federal employee who has as much high-tech equipment and expertise as the government itself. Hackman's role is an extension of Harry Caul, the character he portrayed in Francis Ford Coppola's brilliant 1974 film, THE CONVERSATION. Smith scores as a man who is desperate to reclaim his identity and prove his innocence. This intense technological thrill-ride from director Tony Scott questions how much access the government should have to the communications of private citizens, and leaves the viewer with the unsettling feeling that Big Brother is definitely watching. Watch for the uncredited appearances of Jason Robards, Seth Green, Tom Sizemore, and Philip Baker Hall.
