September 1942. The German Army has advanced to the gates of Stalingrad. The Russian Army holds on desperately. It is so poorly equipped that every pair of soldiers is given a...
more...single rifle--the second man only gets the weapon when the first is cut down. Trapped in no man's land between the opposing armies, Russian recruit Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) finally acquires a rifle from Political Officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Danilov is astonished when Zaitsev picks off several German officers. On their return to the Russian lines, Danilov writes about Zaitsev's exploits in the army newspaper. Zaitsev is assigned to a sniper unit. He kills more German officers and, thanks to Danilov, becomes a hero. In retaliation, the Germans bring in sharpshooter Major Konig (Ed Harris) from Berlin--to hunt Zaitsev. The two snipers engage in a desperate duel, as the appalling Battle of Stalingrad rages.
In ENEMY AT THE GATES, director Jean-Jacques Annaud uses a palate of dull greens, blues, and greys to tell the powerful, true story of Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev. The film is distinguished by fine performances from Law, Fiennes, Rachel Weisz as a female soldier, and Bob Hoskins as Nikita Khrushchev--with Harris particularly notable as the chilly, aristocratic Konig.

The year is 1942 and the Nazis are invading Russia. Under the leadership of Khrushchev (Bob Hoskins) the citizens of Stalingrad must retaliate and push them back. Uncovered from this bloody mess an expert Russian sniper named Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law), and his fellow survivor Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Zaitsev does not just kill any old soldier, he only kills those with power such as sergeants and generals. Zaitsev becomes a hero with his fellow countrymen through his Friend danilov who uses his connections in the media to publicise him. The Germans must stop Zaitsevs onslaught by the only way they can, bring in the best sniper they have general Konig (Ed Harris)… Theres even a love story intermingled in there (how cute).

If you liked Saving Private Ryan, Windtalkers and films in that genre then you will certainly love this one (I hope). As you would expect from any war film it is filled to the brim with action and heat pumping adrenalin-rushing sequences. By the end of the film you start to think its real and you make those stupid childish gun poses with your hand and point them towards your partner or friend making that stupid gun noise for no apparent reason(or I do at least…) . So the film must have a feel good factor and certainly rubs off on you. Jude law and Ed Harris both give classy performances.

A very good film 9/10. Don’t miss this film… (you get it? don’t miss! Haha oh dear….)
