But is this obsession real, or is it all in Joe’s head?
Having directed the fluffy “Notting Hill” a tense film with a foot in both the thriller and drama camps is the last thing you would expect Roger Michell to helm. But he has made an incredible job of it. The main feature of the film is a pervasive air of foreboding that exists even before the thrilling balloon accident. Never has seeing two people sitting down for a picnic in a field seemed so menacing. That Michell manages to maintain and even increase this air of unease throughout the film says something of his skills as a director. Of course he is helped by his source material; a brooding nightmarish novel by Ian McEwan, that has no fear of nastiness. The screenplay centres on Joe’s growing sense of paranoia and its consequences on his relationships with everyone around him. There are a couple of clumsy illustrations of his deteriorating relations, like the use of Claire’s sculptures, but these are a minor flaw in an otherwise well-written script. The unbearably tense atmosphere and underlying potential for violence are maintained throughout the film and their eventual realisation is so casual as to feel entirely unexpected and thoroughly shocking. I have heard it said that Joe Penhall’s screenplay improves on the source material, which is high praise indeed considering the high esteem Ian McEwan is held in.
Michell uses hand-held cameras that give a sense of immediacy to the proceedings and though it gets a little annoying at times, is certainly effective as we are given Joe’s eye-view on the events. Of course his greatest asset is the uniformly splendid cast that give form to the characters. After a few false starts Daniel Craig’s film career is really taking off. His portrayal of a man slowly unhinged by guilt and obsession is an object lesson in natural character progression. Though Joe’s actions are often questionable and his reactions excessive, it seems real. Craig’s commitment to the performance is incredible, making for a truly riveting turn.
Rhys Ifans is the real revelation in terms of acting. His showing as the dangerously obsessive Jed is disturbingly realistic and means that I will never write Ifans off as a buffoonish bit-parter again. He is both pathetic and perturbing, the kind of social leper who could turn sociopath at any moment.
Elsewhere Samantha Morton gives another naturalistic turn as Joe’s sculptress girlfriend Claire, making the most out of a barely-there role and Bill Nighy gives convincing paternal warmth as the fatherly Robin. Helen McCrory blends anger and grief as the wife of the man who dies, displaying a more understandable reaction to the opening events.
Jeremy Sams’ simple but insistent score underlines the mounting tension evidenced by the script. A series of high-pitched violin solos jangle the nerves while the ensemble string sections toy with our emotions and expand on the solo themes. Rarely have violins been used so effectively since “Psycho”.
As films go, “Enduring Love” is a masterclass in both acting and directing. The performances are superb and the director proves how good British cinema can be, even if it’s shot on a shoestring budget. It manages to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout and shocks even when you know something’s going to happen. It’s not a fun film to watch, but it is rewarding. As long as you can bear the ceaseless seat-gripping tension, it’s worth watching for the remarkable acting and atmosphere. But you might want to go for a drink afterwards.
Advantages: great acting Disadvantages: unsettling
Joe (Daniel Craig) is having a picnic with his girlfriend Claire (Samantha Morton) in the English countryside when a hot air balloon appears in the field behind them. There is a young boy trapped in the basket and his grandfather is trying unsuccessfully to help him. Three other bystanders see the balloon in trouble and run to help, grabbing the ropes to try and pull it back down onto the ground.
Joe runs to the boy's aid and soon the four would-be ... ...until they have to let go in fear of being taken to their death. One man - a doctor - holds on. His body is later found in a field.
Joe is wracked with guilt. He should have held on. They all should have. Everything he sees reminds him of the accident, even though his girlfriend tells him he did all he could to help.
One of the other 'helpers', Jed (Rhys Ifans), contacts Joe, saying he needs to talk about the accident. He's very mysterious - asking ...

Advantages: Excellent and thrilling film Disadvantages: None
I normally have this theory about the relationship between books and films. You can make a good film out of an indifferent novel but you rarely make a great movie from a great novel. Why is this? Well, when a novel is very good it is difficult to do other than make a faithful rendition of it on film. As a result this type of film tends to disappoint because the film tells you nothing new.
It was with some trepidation that I went to see “Enduring ... ...Ian McEwan’s masterpieces.
The film starts with a ballooning accident – yes an accident involving a balloon, not one which expands! Joe, a serious-looking lecturer in London played by Daniel Craig and his girlfriend Claire (Samantha Morton) are having a picnic in an idyllic rural setting when a hot-air balloon appears on the scene. There is a young boy on board and his grandfather, on the ground, is trying to stop it from flying off and failing. ...

The trailer for this film depicted a hard hitting stalking sort of thriller if you like. Blatent false advertising!!!!!
Daniel Craig plays the main character Joe, workng in a college in biology. His 'girlfriend' is played by Samantha Morton, Claire.
They have a picnic, and see a young lad in trouble, trapped in a moving hot air balloon with someone desperately trying to keep it to ground.
As the man is struggling, Craig and a few men who appear ... ...first it looks good, but a big gust of wind takes the balloon upwards, with the men.
Craig then lets go and drops before it gets too high, and the men all follow but one. One stays clinging to the rope, and the others watch until ultimately he falls and dies.
Checking to see he is dead, Craig goes to the field with his new 'friend' Rhys Ifans. He pushes Craig to pray at the dead mans landing place, and a brief tap on the shoulder sparks an infatuation.

Advantages: An intensive workout that will definately burn the calories! Disadvantages: Definately NOT for beginners
This DVD came about because it was Nell McAndrews favourite fitness class that she attended and she loved it so much she asked the trainer to make a DVD.
When you are doing this DVD you feel very much like you are training for the marines! It is set in an aircraft hanger with the trainer bellowing out instructions and a pumping soundrack. It is definately not your airy-fairy Rosemary Connely workout with pop music and aerobics outfits. By the end of the video the people in it, even Nell herself are visibly struggling and you can almost smell the sweat coming through the television screen!!
If you love a really hard workout which gives you pain and tests your endurance then you will love this DVD. However, if its a bit of light stretching you're after this is definately NOT the right workout for you. I can honestly say that ...
Advantages: great, fun movie, excellent C.G effects and loads of extras!!!!! Disadvantages: a little tame on the gore and violence factor compared to the previous films!

DVD Description
While enjoying a romantic picnic in the English countryside, Joe (Daniel Craig) and Claire (Samantha Morton) become party to a tragic accident involving a hot air balloon. Haunted by the incident, and guilt-stricken that he wasn't able to do more, Joe begins to distance himself from Claire. But more disturbing is the behaviour of Jed (Rhys Ifans), another stranger who lent a hand during the accident and begins stalking Joe. At first, Joe thinks that Jed is just suffering from posttraumatic stress and needs to talk about what they've been through together. But with each encounter, as Jed admonishes Joe to let go and admit his feelings, Joe feels more and more uneasy, confused and irritated. This psychological thriller from director Roger Michell (NOTTING HILL) explores how one experience can affect many people in different ways while also examining the subtleties of love and relationships. Craig is superb as Joe, a natural-born leader and rational college professor whose life is turned upside down both by his inability to prevent the accident, and by his interactions with Jed. Ifans is super creepy as the disturbed stalker, a far cry from his turn as the loveable goof Spike in NOTTING HILL.
