End of Days begins in 1979, where a girl is being born in New York City. This girl will be the one Satan attempts to impregnate at the turn of the century. Yeah, it's not just an apocalypse movie, it's a Y2K movie - great. Fast forward to 1999, with the girl's parents killed off and she, now 20, is experiencing "hallucinations" and nightmares.
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the role of Jericho Cane, a bodyguard who is hired to protect the man whose body Satan will take over. At least this is a little more plausible than how the protagonists in many other films got involved (Armageddon). When Jericho follows the trail left behind by this man's would-be assassin, he finds much more than he bargains for and commits himself to a one-on-one battle with the dark one himself, becoming the girl's bodyguard.
While it really has no science fiction elements to it, End of Days comes off as an off-the-wall sci-fi flick with plenty of action. Many of the events and elements of the film are just plain stupid and poorly presented (the guy in the subway was overdone, don't you agree?). The film is completely shallow, with absolutely nothing to analyze other than the obvious things that have been touched upon countless times before (i.e., have faith, evil begets evil, blah blah blah). If you want a meaningful viewing experience, check out Devil's Advocate - not only does Al Pacino make the best Satan possible, it's a very deep and engaging film. For me at least, this movie did a very poor job getting the audience to root for the good guys - I didn't give a rat's ass about any of the characters in this movie and was restless throughout, hoping that the very predictable denouement would arrive as soon as possible.
While the movie may not be worth the plastic it comes on, at least there's a chance the special features will make up for it given the fact that it's a Universal disc. Sure enough, one of the top DVD-producing studios doesn't disappoint with this one. Included on the disc is a "Spotlight on Location" featurette, theatrical trailer, audio commentary track with Director Peter Hyams, a special effects feature that takes a look at how ten of the intense special effects scenes were created, a text-based feature that explains the Book of Revelation, a music video from Everlast and another from Rob Zombie, production notes, cast & crew bios, a trailer for U-571, and DVD-ROM support.
This disc is loaded with features, and the presentation score is truly excellent as well. While the menus are completely static with the exception of the main menu that features background audio, the cuts in between menus are extremely well done. The disc art is also very good.
End of Days is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and the transfer is anamorphic. The video is sharp and holds up well through all the intense special effects scenes and awkward lighting that is present throughout the film. The 5.1 channel English audio track is really fantastic, with incredibly well done surround effects and plenty of bass. This is one disc where you'll really feel like you're in the center of the action with a quality home theater system. There's also a 2-channel French soundtrack and English captions are available as well.

Advantages: An excellent film which shows Arnie can act. Worth watching for Gabriel Byrne's seminal perfromance alone. Disadvantages: Glorifies the catholic church as the protectors of mankind. Yeah, right.
