Any movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is bound to have a soundtrack designed to match ... more
his brawn at every turn. The big hype here is the first Guns N' Roses track since 1993 (if Axl Rose alone can be GNR). While the track "Oh My God" alone probably isn't solid enough to distinguish this soundtrack, unreleased cuts from Korn and Limp Bizkit and notable contributions from Sonic Youth, Rob Zombie, Prodigy and Creed make this an impressive collection of hard rock at the millennium's end. For those interested in subtler moves, Everlast contributes the previously unreleased "So Long", which was allegedly written before the Columbine High School shootings in 1999 and serves as a haunting premonition of the tragedy. Its moody introspection is a suitable counterbalance to the over-the-top rhythms and rage sported throughout. Rapper Eminem is incredibly heated with the aptly named "Bad Influence".--Rob O'Connor

intriguing piece of experimentation--an electronically manipulated boy soprano's voice. Later there are plenty of deviations from this opening idea, but as Big Arnie's soulful motif it's the most recurrent of all the musical material. This opening cue also sets a stylistic precedent for much of what follows. The atonal effect of breathing voices mixed with electronics and sombre ensemble is akin to sound design. If it makes for long stretches of unnerving aural distraction, that's to John Debney's credit. Bursting out of the quietude comes some frighteningly loud drama--as you'd expect with Schwarzenneger taking on Satan himself--cue aTerminator-like beat in "The Shooter", fast and furious action crashes in "Helicopter Pursuit" and the showpiece scariness of "Subway Attack&Escape". All of the vocal effects find resolution before ascending heavenwards in "Redemption". And then at the album's end come two complete surprises: an alternate, bravely experimental "Alternate Main Title" and a "Dance Mix" of some of the material. It isn't likely to have anyone doing a Beelzebub Bop but it's certainly frightening!--Paul Tonks

<End of Days>
Somewhere in the back streets of New York Gabriel Byrne is enjoying a meal in a cafe; as he enters the rest room he is assaulted and possessed by an invisible creature (that just happens to be Satan). Immediately we see this character have a profound effect on those around him as his sexual presence becomes very evident. In ancient scriptures it has ... ...a sexual relationship and thus produce an heir on Earth. The event will take place just before Midnight December 31st 1999. (Although humans celebrate this as being a new millennium, the calendars were changed many years ago to align the human calendar with celestial events).
Gabriel Byrne begins to scour New York looking for a pre-ordained woman (who was born on a pre ordained day and year) to impregnate. As he 'imagines' sexual encounters he sends ...

Having seen this film before, but missed half of it due to somebody inherently whittering down my earhole! This time however I was not to be perturbed!

Apparently Satan himself is going to return to find himself a wife, consummate their union, have kids, settle down and plunge the world into an eternity of darkness, despair and debauchery…

Advantages: Arnie at his hammiest best Disadvantages: devilish whoop-arse
...that mumbo-jumbo about the apoc...apoco...apololy...the end of the world occuring just because the calendar was suddenly about to sprout three zeros. As it goes the powers that be in Hollywood didn't make too much of baboon's arse about it and this turned out to be, if not a masterpiece, then something worth buying popcorn for.
In terms of more plot revelation (but not too much in case someone out there hasn't seen it) I shall say thus: It all begins ... ...satan's true form towards the end (sha - we all knew we would) and low and behold he looks exactly like a great big ugly vulture with horns and icky bat wings and everything associated with cheese induced nightmares. Again this is nothing new unless of course you don't tend to watch this genre of movie, in which case your eyeballs may just fall out and create a bubbling puddle on the floor. The ending is of course in true Hollywood style and if you're ...

Advantages: decetn effects extras, good presentation, entertaining Disadvantages: R2 misses extras, could have been better
End of Days was heralded as the return of Arnie to the big screen after a a few years absence. Unfortunately films like The Matrix had been released and the bar for action movies had been raised from the days when all you needed were some over the top bad guys and some heavy firepower and one-liners.
That's not to say that this is a bad movie. Far from it, it sets out it's stall and does exactly what it says on the tin but you can't help but feel ... ...worry the un-trained eye.
End of Days is an action film and the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound fits into your expectations. There is a good level of surround action throughout with some bass shaking moments. The music is mixed well into the fold and dialogue is clear.
Flick through the simple but effective animated menus and you're greeted with a reasonable set of extras.
Director Peter Hyams contributes an audio commentary to the film and at times it's ...

Advantages: An excellent film which shows Arnie can act. Worth watching for Gabriel Byrne's seminal perfromance alone. Disadvantages: Glorifies the catholic church as the protectors of mankind. Yeah, right.
...the film, don't worry.
End Of Days is a film which was released in late 1999 to coincide with the beginning of the new millenium, as this is what the story revolves around. You see, the world is about to end at the stroke of midnight, Dec 31, 1999. And Auld Nick's gong to take over. Yes ladies and gents, it's the Devil against the rest, Good v Evil. And it makes for a pretty good film.
The story goes something like this: the bible got it wrong. ... ...marking the apocalypse (or the End Of Days, hence the title). But things don't go according to plan, and Satan's plans are scuppered by a burnt-out ex-cop turned security guard, by the name of Jericho, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. He stumbles across this dastardly plan, and does his best to prevent it, eventually having to renew his lost faith in God to defeat the ultimate enemy. It's a good story, and it's quite well thought out. There are a ...
