DVD Description
Sammo Hung plays Courageous Cheung, a cuckolded husband who faces a series of supernatural challenges from his wife's wealthy lover. First, Cheung must survive a night in a house haunted by a bloodthirsty vampire. From there, things just get worse--and more comical. For those unfamiliar with the Chinese horror genre, the film is a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride through the supernatural mythology and folklore of China: Hopping corpses, supernatural possession by a monkey god, the gratuitous sacrifice of a chicken, and lots of chanting by Taoist priests will all seem pretty trippy. For Chinese viewers in the early 1980s, the film was unusual in other ways: Director Hung mixed comedy, martial arts, and supernatural horror into this bouillabaise of a film, establishing the genre of kung-fu horror comedy. Several films in the genre followed, including the popular MR. VAMPIRE series and many films with the word "spooky" in their titles, including Hung's SPOOKY, SPOOKY and ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND 2, a sequel in name only.

Advantages: The documentary seals the deal! Disadvantages: NO AUDIO COMMENTARY!!!
...I’ve been waiting for this disc for sooo long. It has to be one of my favourite movies, so I suppose this review will be a little bit biased.
One of Spielbergs finest moments and a very entertaining DVD.
You know what happens in the movie, all that remains for me to say is that this disc has been THX certified, so you know your going to get the best sound and the picture quality is crisp and sharp from start to finish.
Best bits for me are the mashed potato scene and the scene where Richard Dreyfuss's character is in his truck and he first encounters the UFO.
So, the pricetag has already, quite rightly, been justified with the movie itself.
The extras, although, the disc isn’t brimming with them(...Mr Spielberg? Where is your audio commentary?...)are excellent. Best of all a making of documentary clocking...

Advantages: good effects, superb story Disadvantages: drags on in places
...This 1977 Stephen Spielberg classic was released in the same year as the other sci-fi classic of the last 25 years (Star Wars). Despite the obvious competition of Star Wars, Close Encounters still stands out today as a great sci-fi film. The story revolves around various people who either have strange encounters or obsessions and it all leads them to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming where all the government authorities are waiting for the first encounter with beings from another planet. The film is about 2 hours long but is well worth watching over and over again, even if it’s only for the musical notes that are made when the communication between earth’s scientist’s and the space craft are taking place....
