I have made it a recent rule to myself that once a week I must watch a film and so I have tried to stick to it even though I have been busy. I don't like to stick to the same genre of film all of the time, so I try and pick a different choice of films. This week I picked Employee of the Month. I had mainly only heard of it because of it being Jessica Simpson starring in it, I'm sure it was one of her first if not her first acting roles and so it was hyped up a bit but from the adverts at that time, I just didn't really feel like paying to see it. I got the DVD off a friend and this way didn't feel as bothered about wasting money and so put in the DVD to watch.
The film begins with us seeing Zack Bradley (Dane Cook), who has been working for a long time at Super Club which is a big retail warehouse selling everything in bulk basically. We then see Vince (Dax Shephard) get announced as Employee of the Month again for the 17th month. The employees seem a bit bored by this regular occurrence and it is then said that if he gets to eighteen months he will be the first employee in the history of Super Club to do this which means he will win a brand new car. The managers do announce that anyone is still fair play to get the title in the next month but of course Vince doesn't see anyone as competition. It is also announced to the workers that a new employee called Amy (Jessica Simpson) will be starting the next day.
As soon as Zack sees Amy he likes the look of her but doesn't think he stands a chance and of course Vince has already wormed his way in. After reading up her personal record Zack's friends find out that she apparently only goes for Employees of the Month and so this is when Zack decides he will do whatever it takes to gain the title for the month and the competitive streak is let loose. Zack starts to panic when he sees that Amy is falling for Vince so out come his tricks to do every right thing he can to get enough gold stars to keep him in the running to become Employee of the Month.
This film was actually a lot better than I'd thought it would have been. I knew by looking at the cast judging by previous roles that this would be a comedy but a bit silly. I didn't find it terrible though; it did have a plot and was original in that sense. I think the acting was alright but nothing special, to me Dax Shepard made the film in the role of Vince as he was the sort of villain role who you don't want to win but who is the funniest. I saw him before in 'Without a Paddle' but he wasn't as big a part although still good at comedy. He also used to be in 'Punk'd' with Ashton Kutcher playing pranks on people so quite a leap but I don't think he'd be good in anything but comedy.
Dane Cook was the role of Zack and I had seen him recently in Good Luck Chuck. He is good at comedy but in this film he seemed to play a similar role as he had in that film. He is good in the sense that he could be taken seriously as well he isn't the type just purely for laughs but he is adaptable in a sense. He is good in this film though and is likeable. Jessica Simpson was ok in this film but she didn't do much in the way of acting she was just the attractive female character who played a cute blonde girl acting all innocent for men to fall at her feet. She was likeable enough in the role but I felt no real skill went into the acting.
I would say this was a film for anyone looking for an easy going film with nothing too hard to focus on. It also has a few laughs and a bit of a plot and the cast is all likeable. If you hate silly comedies then do not watch this as you will have nothing good to say about it.
This film is available to buy on DVD from Amazon costing £5.98 with postage on top or from Play.com for £5.99 with free delivery. You could even look on eBay for some good deals. It is approximately 103 minutes long and is a 12A certificate. The official website is: http://www.employeeofthemonthfilm.com/
