DVD Description

EMPIRE, the debut film from director-writer Frank Reyes is a Latin GOODFELLAS, chronicling the rise and fall of Victor Rosa (John Leguizamo), a Puerto Rican drug-dealer working the violent streets of the South Bronx. With an eye for money and a head for business, Victor dreams of one day achieving the wealth and success of a legitimate businessman. When Victor discovers that his girlfriend Carmen (Delilah Cruz) is pregnant, he jumps at the chance to give up the dangerous drug trade and joins forces with two new friends, Jack (Peter Skarsgaard)--a flashy Wall Street Investment banker, and his girlfriend Trish (Denise Richards). Jack offers Victor a new way of life and promises him access to "sure thing" investments. Eager to go legit, Victor quickly embraces Jack's standards of living. He gives up the streets of the Bronx for Jack's slick Soho loft and moves into the fast-talking, money-driven world of Wall Street. However, Carmen misses the warmth and familiarity of her roots in the South Bronx and Victor is torn between his own ambition and his desire to please her. Ultimately, he realises too late that Jack and Trish are not all who they seem to be, and his best-laid plans begin to falter as he is forced to accept the magnitude of their betrayal.

Professional reviews

Review: "...Compelling....Leguizamo owns EMPIRE, the first film to capture the live-wire crackle of his one-man stage shows....He holds the screen with a simmering self-assurance..." (Entertainment Weekly, p.60, 13/12/2002)

"...Engrossing and utterly uncompromising....[Leguizamo] gives one of the best performances of the year..." (Los Angeles Times, p.C6, 06/12/2002)

Die Hard with a vengeance (Wide Screen)
Review of Die Hard With A Vengeance (Wide Screen) by  andrew1971

Advantages: Wide view of Picture as intended for cinemas
Disadvantages: Unsuitable view for Portable DVD's

...The third and final part (as of yet) of the Die Hard series and Bruce Willis is back this time alongside Samuel L Jackson. This Widescreen version is suitable for anyone who's television set as the ability to show widescreen pictures. With this you can see more of the film has it was intended to be seen at the cinema. Sometimes films are cut to fit onto standard screen sizes. The film is probably the best of the three films and Jackson gives Willis a run for his money in the action scenes. The Villian played by Jeremy Irons although not as good has Alan Rickman in the first Die Hard film does an excellent potrayal of a German villian. If you are a fan of the series but have only watched them on television (with adverts betwween) then go and purchase this film and see how it was intended to be seen.... Read review

H.G. Wells Would Turn In His Grave
Review of Empire Of The Ants (Wide Screen) by  sghawken

Advantages: It ends
Disadvantages: The list is too long

...Empire Of The Ants begins with a lesson on Ant’s the narrator tells you things about ants that you might never have known, and probably did not want to either come to that. All the same this creates the illusion of structure to this 1977 movie, often dubbed as the worst movie of all time. A sad fact when you consider the tales author is none other than H.G. Wells. Marilyn (Joan Collins) is a con artist, her way to secure her future is to con a group of prospective buyers into purchasing property on a new island development, and of course the development will never be built because by the time building should start she is hoping to be long gone with the cash in hand. In order to ensnare buyers Marilyn tempts people to the idea of a cruise style vacation, unbeknown to Marilyn however the group with the exception of maybe one party has... Read review

Lara on the big screen ( Updated )
Review of Lara Croft - Tomb Raider 2: The Cradle Of Life (Wide Screen) by  lisa2062

Advantages: action packed, amazing special effects
Disadvantages: Some may find it all too predictable.

...Having been a fan of the Tomb raider computer games since their release, I was excited about seeing Lara Croft's character being transformed into a real life character on the big screen! Having thoroughly enjoyed Angelina Jolie's first big screen outing as Lara croft, I was eager to see if the sequel could live up to it! The critics gave it a very poor review but this didn't deter me from purchasing the DVD on the day of its release, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Plot Lara Croft ( Angelina Jolie) returns in her second feature outing, and this time is on a round the world mission to recover Pandora's Box before it is found by a maniacal scientist ( Ciaran Hinds) who plans to use it for mass annihilation! For this mission she recruits former lover Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), a mercenary who has previously betrayed... Read review
