Steven Spielberg's 'Empire Of The Sun', based on the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, stars Christian Bale as Jim Graham, a British schoolboy separated from his upper-class...
more...colonial parents when the Japanese sweep into Shanghai during World War II. Temporarily orphaned, Jim attaches himself to Basie (John Malkovich), a fast-talking American opportunist determined make a buck off the spoils of war. Later, when the two are interned in a prison camp, Jim's boyish fantasies are fueled by the grace and daring of the Japanese fighter pilots whom he comes to idolise despite their enemy status. Spielberg's visually spectacular wartime epic is a testimony to the human will to survive and a child's ability to find wonder even in the midst of horror. Thirteen-year-old Welsh actor Christian Bale is brillant as Jim in his feature film debut. Spielberg himself identified more with Jim, a boy who is obsessed with flying and who experiences the death of his innocence, than with E.T.'s Elliott. After a year of negotiations with the Chinese, Spielberg and his crew were allowed to film in Shanghai, which was virtually unchanged since World War II.

This is such a fantastic film sporting child actor at the time Christian Bale who delivers one of the best performances i have ever seen from a minor. The story of a young British child in 2nd World War Japan who loses his parents after a huge riot which he caused through the mischeif you would expect from a child, i won't give too much away...

The story is, for what i can gather is utterly flawless, with no plot-holes or misconceptions of the era. Its moving and character driven around Bale's character and somewhat on John Malkovich's charter "Basie" who you grow to either love or hate throughout the film.

I have no idea why the film wasn't released prior to 2006 on region 2 DVD, considering it was produced back in 1987. It has lost so much of its credibility!

Other performances include the role of John Malcovich whos character is at first a saviour to young Chrisitan Bale, but becomes increasingly unpopular with the audience throughout the film but is still admired by the young and lost Bale. His performance is first rate as a Villain/Lovable Character and as always his comedic/dramatic style of acting is evident here.

The special effects, well i can't really comment on them as their wern't many. As a war film goes as i said it is mainly character driven. There is a nice ending scene involving planes, but i do not want to give the plot away i want you to watch the film!

I recommend buying the DVD from "play" as it is probabaly the best in cheap and fast delivery on DVD's, music etc.

I can't write a lenghty review without giving too many plot points away so i will keep it short and sweet. If you are into war films that make you emotional then "Empire of the Sun" is for you.

10/10
