Like the cherry blossoms and bloody decapitations that saturate its frames, director Mamoru Kanbe's grisly anime series 'Elfen Lied' contrasts the opposing forces of innocence and evil with equal parts beauty and violence. Sexy, pink-haired Lucy is part of a race of genetic mutants known as Diclonius, who sport horns in their heads and are able to savagely dismember their victims with the use of psychically controlled invisible arms called vectors. After Lucy makes a violent escape from the military compound that imprisons her, she washes up naked and vulnerable on a beach shorefront and is taken in by teenage cousins Kohta and Yuka. But unbeknownst to her kindly benefactors, the now mute and amnesiac Lucy - re-dubbed Nyu for her inability to speak - still retains traces of her true killer nature, which amply reveals itself when the government sends out a team of renegade soldiers and another female mutant assassin to find and destroy her. Bloody and violent yet beautifully animated; this volume continues the anime series with three more episodes.
Advantages: Groundbreaking anime Disadvantages: DVD extras are kept to a minimum
...as a means of disparity between the natural world and the human beings.
There are many imaginative moments in ElfenLied, especially in the first vector. The several individuals and their respective feelings are made very clear throughout the entire series. You will be close to tears more than once, notably in the last episodes.
If you intend to watch the anime in English, the voices are well acted for the most part. The English subtitles for the original Japanese are excellent.
The closing titles fade in and out with J-pop (Japanese pop music), the norm for most anime titles. But the opening titles are another story altogether. The imagery is based on paintings from Gustav Klimt and features Lilium, an enchanting operatic suite by Kumiko Noma.
As far as the DVD goes, the "extras" section seems a bit superficial. You get a glimpse...

Advantages: kids like it Disadvantages: is nothing compared to the original
...senses and seeks help.
Overall I'm awarding a 3 star rating, dispite it appearing they've actually put some effort into the DVD e.g. by addiing bonus trailers, interviews and clips it still doesn't detract from the point that it's not a good series and is really aimed at little children. I'm still surprised Rowan let this go ahead, although Mr Bean wasn't his creation, it is his image and the new t.v. series ruins what was a classic masterpiece 'Mr Bean'.
Thanks for reading & best wishes, mintz x x x...

Advantages: Good music, extremely good animation, good action scenes and very emotionally involving. Disadvantages: Might be too extreme for some. Expect ultra-violence, nudity and a hint at incest. Possibly expensive.

This volume contains episodes 1-4 in both dubbed and subtitled versions. Each episode is about 20 minutes in length, as standard with most animes. The 13 episodes are spread across 4 dvds, so it can cost quite a bit to acquire the whole series.
The story is set in a fictional version of our own world where some humans have a special mutation which gives them a kind of psychic powers, and a human with this mutation is called a Diclonius. The series revolves around one...
